'Wii 2 won't have hand controllers'

Leading microchip manufacturer Intel believes Nintendo's successor to the best-selling Wii console won't come with hand controllers.

"We imagine some future generation of [Nintendo's] Wii won't have hand controllers," said Justin Rattner, the company's chief technology officer.

"You just set up the cameras around the room and wave your hand like you're playing tennis."

Ofcource any of the 3 companies could also use this technology, not just Nintendo.

According to Business Week, the firm is keen not to miss the opportunity to get involved in the next generations of games systems after it was beaten to it by IBM for the current models.

they would have 2 have something, i already feel pretty stupid playing tennis in my front room with the mote, i would feel even stupider with noting in my hand, + it wouldn't feel right

still sonuds like some pretty cool tecnology

it cirtainly does, but it would be the next logical step for ninty, unless it is very expensive then it ust goes aginst everyting the wii is about

I agree that you need to have SOMETHING to hold otherwise it just feels stupid. Like you have to have the wii mote acting as your tennis racket/golf club/zapper etc

How the feck would you play Mario Galaxy? I don't fancy running on the spot, jumping and spinning to get my console to recreate the motions onscreen.. .. .. I have breakables around (not limited to myself).


On a related note, I'm sure someone posted a link previously to a video of a similar system that used a blue room and cameras.. .. .. I don't know about your domestic arrangements, but blue lounge? Not happening in my house - Mrs ff would kill me!

To get an idea of what this would involve, it would be similar to putting o a suit for motion capture that movie studios use in films.
The camera's are placed around a blue screen and "key onto" the bobbles on the suit (they can't simply key onto the actor).

Watching the extra's for LOTR, it was made clear that EVERYONE on set referred to Serkis as "that bloke in the Gimp suit" when he played his Gollum role.

So just to be clear - a console of this nature would probably require you to put on a suit and look like a gimp just to play a game.....
