Maybe there's a more sinister reason why Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past on Virtual Console this past Monday: this morning, they announced they'd surpassed 1.5 million sales on Virtual Console -- as of yesterday. In any case, considering the current install base of Wii, that means a considerable number have, at least, ventured and purchased one old classic.
What's a little more puzzling is Nintendo's reveal that they produced over 4 million Wii consoles by the end of 2006, but only shipped roughly 3.2 million to retail. We've heard that Nintendo avoided expensive air shipments Sony so publicly publicized (then again, they really needed the numbers), but clearly Nintendo's having no trouble keeping up with demand -- they just need to ship more!
