I bang the hell out of those bongos every chance I get
Yes! donkey konga is a real rhythm game and is so much better than guitar hero, because you are actually really making music. It's like playing a real set of bongos, whereas guitar hero is nothing like a guitar. You're not really making music in GH, and the only real exercise of skill is how fast you can tap those buttons, you don't have to have a sense of rhythm to play it (does help though.) Whereas with DK you really have to feel the groove.
That's why I don't understand the obsession over guitar hero. There's nothing really musical about it, you don't need rhythm, or any sense of melody or pitch. At least donkey konga has one of those things.
I think donkey konga fails in comparison to Guitar Hero. Yes you do need rythm in every aspect of Guitar Hero, and you need much more than donkey konga. In Donkey Konga you are only required to pat the drums when it says. In GH, you have to press the frets AND strum. You already need double the rythm to play GH than DK. There are 4 combinations of notes in DK. Left, Right, Both, Clap. In GH there are 25 possible combinations. I had no idea that 4 took more skill than 25. Yes, I owned both donkey konga games, and GH1 could beat them both.

Jesus H. Play Guitar Hero on Hard or above and you'll realise how much skill it requires. How you can compare a pair of bongos to a guitar is beyond me, and this is coming from someone who plays the drums in real life.

You need the rythmn for strumming, as well as timing of pressing the buttons. You also need the melody of the song, as this helps with the "frets".
A quick question, have you played GH on hard? just wondering, as from what you have said it seems like you haven't.
Reasons why it's fun: I personally can't put my finger on it. Whether its the rsi from hours of playing, or the frustrations of being stuck, but having the feeling that you can do better (even when you probably can't) or what, I don't know. It just has the gameplay that I find captivating, it's a game that you can pick up and play without having to know too much, It's not one that you have to play solely so you don't forget the plot/what to do next etc.
I've gone a bit scattergun on you there, but I reckon if you get into it, until at least medium (or Dragonforce Easy) then you may come to love it.

I know I know!!
It's GOT to happen!
And for the record, I also own Donkey Konga(Bought it specifically for the Wii, never had a GC ) Which I also love, but it's just not the same...(having said that, 4 player DK is one of the best gaming experiences around!)
I think the music in GH is more my style, so that swings it for me. Both require rythmn, no question!
But also, both are not an indication of how well you would play the real instrument

Waiting for someone to say this.
Before Hughjass comes back and says something else, in the real bongo's, which I have repeadietly hit (Music teacher doesn't always watch what happens in the precussion section) the tone depends on where you hit the drums.
P.S. Not to burst your bubble foo, but seeing as their hasn't been an update on the "Speculated" DLC since last year, I doubt it. Oh well, guess I will have to settle for "Learn to Fly" on Rock Band
