Exclamation Wii Component cable

Red, yellow, green and blue... and white..I can sing a rain bow.

So prey tell, what does a component cable offer you over the pre packed red white and yellow?

Well, let me asume that everyone of this here forum has invested some serious money in some HD tv, if the answer is yes sir, please stop reading this post, and head on down to your local kwick saves and buy this cable right now.

Ok for the readers who are still reading, or are indeed a glutton for punishment, in the form of my delightful typos... I shall try to explain what the difference is.

the basic cable is yellow white and red. We all know that, pay attention back of the class.

Yellow handles video, white and red (or red and white if you prefer) handles the audio, easily done.

So what does green, blue, red offer me?

Well Clive, I can call you Clive right?

Basically it seperates the colours, red green, and blue..yummy!
Our basic three colours that most tvs make the colours. Hmph.

So what ? Doesnt yellow do that on its own?
I mean come on, mellow yellow...

Well yes, you would be right in saying that.

However, lets imagine yellow is a busy motor way.
You are red, along side of you is green in his flash gti, and along side him is blue.. in his mini. Now being your travelling the yellow motor way, as per usual the people that dig up the roads, are doing so.
Sorry one lane traffic only. You in your nice red car have to share with green and blue..ah what a mess.

Now some crazy fool decided to open a motor way for red, green and blue, with three seperate lanes.. BRILLIANT!

Thats basically what Component does..ahem.

So... the test, does it make a difference?

In a short answer YES! Especially if you have HD.

I could bore you all day with the amazing difference between interlacing and progressive scanning, alas the Gregorians recon the world ends this year.

So lets just leave it as, the picture is nicer.
Sharper, Bolder, less fuzzier.

So If you have the facility to fix up a component to your system do so, even if your non HD, I promise the merits are well worth it.

product review. 9/10 ( a bit over priced )

I don't have a HD TV so I never bothered with a component cable - are you 100% sure that if I got one the picture on my bog standard TV would be improved?

Nice explanation though. Thanks Clive

Worth mentioning - you don't plug them in to the red/white/yellow inputs - you must have the RGB inputs! Am I right in thinking a 21pin scart converter can help here?

I prefer to be called dave, not clyde

Although a few top notch CRT TV's have component input, generally it is only flat screens (LCD or Plasma) that have this input.

There will be a total of 5 phono inputs - red, green & blue for the component lead plus red and white for the stereo audio lead.

As discussed previously, if your TV has this input, use it! This is the best possible output from the Wii and gives a 480p (progressive scan) image, which is a helluva lot crisper than the image given with the lead you get in the box!

Even if you don't have a flatscreen telly, you should invest in an RGB SCART lead for your Wii, as this is still much better than the composite lead they give you.

By the way, possibly the wackiest review I've read in a while, and I first read it shortly after it was posted.

I'm tempted to ask, wii_doomey - were you sober???

Anyone found a good price for an RGB Scart? Looking around they range from £8 to £20. Also which should be avoided due to being a bit pants? Is official the way to go?

I haven't heard of any being poor quality in particular.

I bought the GameWare one for £12.99, and it's superb.

What is this sober you are refering to?
It sounds a novel notion, even Wikipedia and Dictionary dot com, come up with a delightful Antegooglewhackblatt!

Anyway, as the over Clive's refered to, if you have the inputs for component, nip down to your local gamestation wave a twenty pound note in front of the spotty geek behind the desk. ( I hate them geeks who play video games all day, and do nothing but talk about it, they are a bunch of losers ) Anyway say to him "Here you are miss, a lovely twenty pound note, now run into the stock room and fetch me a component cable, you hideous troll!"

The assistant will thank you for this compliment, and hurry back with said cable, and later in life he will look back on the moment, and tell it to his grandchildren, like if it was Tolkeins Lord Of T' Pingu.

So in reality, not only are you upgrading your picture quality, but someone called Malcom working in a gamestation store, is about to become a lot happier in life.

So Join us in the rebellion against less than great picture quality! Go and buy the cable, you will not regret it.

*All events are based on fiction, but soon to be fact.

Anyway, if you do not enjoy the improvement of picture, I personally repay the time you spent buying cable, I will do this with my dance of Eros, which everyone knows alters the space time continium! Awesome!!

Nice review mate, but a compnent cable does not split the coulurs up in to red, green and blue.Your thinking of RGB.

The three signals in a component video consists of "Y, B-Y, R-Y". The first is the luminance signal, which indicates brightness or black & white information that is contained in the original RGB signal. It is referred to as the "Y" component. The second and third signals are called "color difference" signals which indicate how much blue and red there is relative to luminance. The blue component is "B-Y" and the red component is "R-Y". The color difference signals are mathematical derivatives of the RGB signal.

Green doesn't need to be transmitted as a separate signal since it can be inferred from the "Y, B-Y, R-Y" combination. The display device knows how bright the image is from the Y component, and since it knows how much is blue and red, it figures the rest must be green so it fills it in.
