Default Wii costs $158 to make.

Japanese economic site, Toyokeizai, broke down the Wii components by price and discovered that it apparently, only costs Nintendo about $158 to make a Wii. That’s not including the controllers though.

That article is probably true. They spend more money on R&D and marketing thats where the real cost comes in. They spend millions before hand doing pointless surveys, testing games and hardware with users before they even consider what and how they are going to build it.

Hmmm I'd be surprised if it really cost nintendo that much. I'd say about $100 per unit would be a more realistic estimate.

I know one thing for sure, Nintendo and the retailer both make a healthy profit on every unit sold.

Yes Nintendo are rolling in the money right now making at least £35 on each Wii they sell in the UK. Still when push comes to shove, Wii's are back in stock and Nintendo wants the none gamers to keep those sales going they do need to lower the price to break even.

A little loss to make the Wii look much more cost effective (say £140) will get grandmas picking them up in a snap.

My family played Wii a lot over xmas but then came some questions 'how much does it cost' to which I had to say £180 and you need another £30 controller to play Wii sports as were doing that's too much for people...

No dice Nintendo, not till you lower the price. The price will of course lower as soon as all the hardcore gamers have picked one up and sales slow down.
