Default Yet another Wii lawsuit

These just keep coming out of the woodworks. The latest comes from a company just down the road from my home, Hillcrest.

Nintendo Hit by Another Wii Lawsuit

This one, however, comes with a very serious set of circumstances:

Quote:
Hillcrest alleges that the wand-shaped remote controller for the Wii uses technology that infringes on the Rockville (Md.) company's patents for a "handheld three-dimensional pointing device" and software that works with it on a TV. Hillcrest has also asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to ban import of the Wii.
That's a new one. As the article states, the news caused many investors to sell off a bunch of stock, so buy now while its low folks.

Bottom line appears to be that Nintendo are more than prepared to pay to make these cases go away, and their stock (historically) remains at a highish level.

Turnover in the 10s billions - who'd have thought that a few years ago.....

God appeared to have reacted badly to Bede's prayer for electricity to charge his DS

Or...maybe Nintendo is not as original and innocent as we are led to believe. In this type of multi million business all sorts goes on so oe can never say for sure who is right or wrong but the fact that Nintendo is prepared to pay settlements sounds a bit suspicious to me. If i know that i have invented something 100% original then i will fight my case and wont pay a penny.

I have to agree with this, you wouldnt pay someone to claim your work was theirs! Sounds like Microsoft "Borrowing" peoples ideas and hopeing they dont notice and when they do pay them off.

Am I missing something? How the hell can a company sue Ninty due to the shape of the controller? It's just like any other television remote in the world!

A law professor I had in college, who was both a defense and prosecution lawyer, told me, and I quote: "You can sue for anything as long as you fill out the paperwork properly."

Welcome to the U.S. of A. Doesn't mean you're going to win, but it certainly means you can go through the motions, file, and appear in court, with no one saying a word to you about whether your case is good or bad until you're in front of a judge. And we wonder why frivolous lawsuits exist.

So, to answer your question Nicko, can they sue? Sure they can. Will it matter? I doubt it, but they can try, and maybe Ninty will settle and they'll get a few thousand out of them.

It doesn't mean 3D as in the object is 3D. It refers to the tracking, as the wiimote can track movement in any direction.
