Could someone fill me in on how these things actually work? Do you just have to buy any old game, 1st party games or what?

You get VIP stars when you buy a new game (as in new from the store) You should find a piece of card with a scratch off section.. You also get a code for any new consoles (Wii GC DS) so remember to make sure you have checked the box and in the pages of the manual.

Goto NINTENDO and register yourself then put the code in... there is pretty good instructions on how to do this...

Once you got your stars you can buy stuff at the Stars Catalogue.

Thats more or less it.

Just remember don't expect stars for accessories and 2nd hand games+console.

In the case of the games and consoles the stars are already registered... Its very rare that you find them still usable
