I restarted the machine and did not unplug the mains cable but it didn't save.

Sorry I guess I ought to add that when you want to save, press the home button on the remote, then go back to the wii menu. The game will literally save at the exact place you are at, even mid-boss battle.

To open up the save, just open the game, and it will open the home menu with the game in the background, press the home button and it will launch the game from the very point you quit the game earlier.

Some games, such as Mario 64, Paper Mario etc, will use one of the Wii's inbuilt save blocks instead of the N64 controller pack (as obviously this isn't present), the same for Super Mario World from SNES.

I think you may also have to leave the wii on standby (orange light), but I'm not sure as I keep Wii-connect24 turned on.

I had Lylat Wars on N64, and I got to the last level several times but could not save.

Lylat wars for the N64?

Has no save feature.. you have to play the game from start to finish each time... but it only takes a couple of hours (if that) to finish.. it really isn't that long at all.

In saying that it is a very fun game..

I have played it quite a bit now and it seems that ...

is true!

I got to the last boss on the hardest level last night and died! what a nightmare knowing I have to start from scratch! it just seems cruel.

haha, i had the exact same problem.
But having to play from start to finish can be really great fun. it only takes an hour. =]
