Default Bubble Bobble

I've been wanting this game released on the VC since I began my Wii ownership. I LOVED it at the arcades, I loved it on the Taito 1 compilation disc on the PS2, I knew there had been a NES and GC release so it had to happen on the Wii at some point.

But, with Galaxy taking up all of my gaming time at the moment, I missed the fact that this has been available on the VC since Friday! I know what I'm doing this evening.. .. .. .. and it doesn't involve the long suffering Mrs ff (unless she is prepared to play this game 2 player)!!

What? You have no idea what I'm raving about? Ok then.. .. .. Bubble Bobble is from the days of 8 bit gamery. Two boys, Bub and Bob, have had their girlfriends kidnapped and have been turned into dragons. They have to descend to the deepest part of the dungeon to release the two captive maids. This is a side on enclosed screen platformer - clear one level to move to the next - of the highest order. The graphics are of their time (ie poor compared to modern standards) but the gameplay is phenomenal! Using the d-pad to move left and right, a jump button and a 'fire bubble' button you capture the monsters in bubbles, then pop those bubbles to earn points and fruity rewards. Each level becomes progressively harder from the first to the last (100), and even if you manage to finish it then you will replay it more than once, because for every time you replay it the game CHANGES the powerups and bonus items that are available for you to collect on each level.

How much is a NES game on the VC? 500 points? It will be the best £2.50 you spent on a game.

Playing on the PS2 I got to about the same level. Might have only been 92, not sure.. .. .. there's the level with the 'space invaders' on the platform at the top that you need to bubble / jump twice to get to while they rain down their missiles on you.. .. .. .. I think I managed one more after that (but it's been a while)

I remember it well from my C64 days, think I only managed about level 60 something, but I was only about 8 at the time.

I missed it too, but haven't been checking VC lately as in my opinion it's gone a bit weak in the last couple of months. Anyone agree? Hopefully nintendo will give us a nice christmas present with some great classics available.

It was a great game, I spent many hours playing it on a few different formats, but I'll probably give it a miss this time around, I'm not buying any VC games until the stars for points situation is sorted. Soon I hope, particularly as Ninty are fixing up their website.

I bought it as soon as I saw it available on the virtual console, me and my girlfriend completed it and then again on the Super Bubble Bobble mode, but we played the boss on mute coz the music made us panic! Good times! I hope they bring out Rainbow Island soon!
