I used to own a ps2 and a psp. And an NGC, and now a Wii. And we had an xbox and a ps1 too (as well as a C64, zx81, sinclair ql, atari 2600......well, you get the drift  )
I've never owned shares in any of them
To be fair, I definitely don't think Wii will "do a sega". If you look at the latest sales figures, they tell a different story.
I'm talking about "units sold" as opposed to "units shipped". These can be vastly different as you can tell from Sony.
Sony boasts that it has 4million consoles shipped. Well, yes, that's true. But it has only
sold 2million of those units. The latter figure gives a truer indication of how well something is performing in the industry.
I can ship 89million units of my latest boardgame, but if they're sitting on shop shelves, i'd hardly consider it a success.
So Sony has current worldwide
sales of
2.0million.
The Wii has
sales of
5.2million
The xbox has
sales of
9.36million
In 3 months the wii has managed to ship 56% of units that xbox has managed
in over 1.25 years.
I'd hardly call that "doing a sega".
Again, to be fair, Sony hasn't started in Europe yet, but seeing as they've been out in US for 4 months and a lot of shops can't seem to be able to shift them, is in stark contrast to the Wii where, demand is so high that shelves are percieved to be empty.
The other option is that Ninty simply haven't supplied (rather than demand being high) but this
cannot be true as where did the 5.2million proven sold worldwide units come from then?
Basically, supply for the Wii has been excellent from Nintendo (who have managed to produce and ship a number equal to over half the year long sales of xbox
in just 3 months). It's just that, in this case, demand is massive so they're being snapped up.
Deffo not doing a sega then.
Comparing the Wii to the PS3 in US and Jap only sales (where they've both been out a similar length of time for a fairer comparison), the Wii has sold 3.16million units, and the PS3 has shifted 2.0million.
So it is very fair to say that it is Sony that appear to be struggling...not the Wii.
Again, we have no idea how well the PS3 will perform in Europe, I personally reckon it will sell brilliantly in the UK, but will not fair so well in mainland EU.
Only time will tell.
Just my tuppence
