Sony haven't given up on PS2 yet - a cheaper version is due out in Spring 08. In US it will be $99 (down from $129) - a similar reduction in UK would mean £75. The new version has a built in power supply which lowers manufacturing costs.
PS2 is 7 years old this week, having sold 120m worldwide.
Always loved the PS2. Sony said they plan on keeping it alive till at least 2010!

Who was the first person to look at a cow and say,
"I think I'll squeeze these dangly things here, and drink whatever comes out"?
I still have an original PS2 from 8 years ago, the 1 where the network adapter came as an expansion that included a builit IDE interface so you could add an internal hard drive, for the homebrew enthusiasts. Only problem with that was Sony pulled the plug on that same Homebrew market as they feared people would use it for making illegal copies of software.
Apart from the obvious Wii-like colour change, what significant differences are there between this and my slimline PS2? Inbuilt power supply - is that it?
Bizarre.
You'd think they would bring out a bare bones PS3 without Blu-Ray player to keep that console in the race. Otherwise I can see the PS3 going the same way the Dreamcast and GameCube did - down the Swanny!
Oh, and if the price in the Sates is $99, then it will probably be £99 here - as that is usually how it goes across the pond. We never get stuff as cheap as the yanks, but then we DO get a 1 year warranty, which they don't!
Games owned (that I play): EA Playground, Endless Ocean, Excite Truck, Ghost Squad, Gottlieb Pinball, HotD, Kororinpa, Link’s Crossbow Training, Mario Kart, Mario Party 8, MySims, Pinbusters, RE:UC, Super Paper Mario, SSB Brawl, Wii Fit, Wii Play, Wii Sports

I'd rather pay £75 and take an extended 3 year warraty which would normally cost about £20 and covers everything including accidental damage caused by my daughter putting toast into the CD drive, etc... This still leaves me with about £5 that I can put towards a memory card or pre-owned game.
I thought it was supposed to have a built-in power supply?
Isn't that a power adaptor sat next to it?
You just read my mind!
Looks like it now has no internal power supply, hence the brick outside the PS2, which would make it cheaper to produce, as hardly any cooling would be needed inside the console.
OK just being on the PS2 website and and found this artical from 6/11/07

The new PlayStation 2 aims to bring you its most compact and convenient form yet.
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has unveiled an enhanced design for PlayStation 2, which will be smaller than the existing model and equipped with an internal power supply.
Inheriting all the functions and capabilities that have made PlayStation 2 a best seller, the new model will come in a sleek redesign making it lighter and more compact. A built-in AC adapter completes the package, improving users' ability to enjoy the wide variety of entertainment offered by PlayStation 2 at their convenience.
The new model will be released in Japan in November 2007 in a range of three colours, Charcoal Black, Ceramic White and Satin Silver, with a matching vertical stand also available in the same three hues.
The new PS2 will be the same price as the existing model and will arrive in the PAL region in early 2008, with specific dates to be announced in due course.
