Sony Ericcsson W850i modem...

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but it is for Sony machines.

Anyway, I've heard you can plug your W850i phone into your laptop and use it to connect to the Internet.

Does anyone know if this is correct, or if I've been fooled?

yeah you can go online with a sony and a laptop.

it uses GPRS, which means you pay for what you download, so your phone bill could get a little high if you start surfing youtube and forums etc.

you'll need to get a USB lead (or could be done over bluetooth) and you'll need to install the drivers, which come on either the CD, or the sony website if you dont have the CD.

i think it would set up a connection option in "Network Connections" but am not sure as ive never done it, you may have to do it your self, or it maybe done for you.

the Sony site should have instructions on how to do it all though.

I think that most of the networks now do a laptop modem card that performs the same function but for only about £15 per month.. .. .. might be a cheaper option?

I have the Sony Ericson W850i phone as well and I am on the 3 network. You can go online with GPRS but it will cost you a fortune and it's not that fast.

3 have recently started a new offer where you can get entry level broadband speed using their network and a USB modem. Prices start from £10 a month.

I am on the £15 a month plan and get up to 3.6Meg connection (depending on whether I am at home or in the middle of a field doing a car boot)! For £15 you get a download limit of around 3GB, if you want more than that then they do an plan for £25 a month where you can get 7GB of downloads.

The other mobile networks do offer this kind of service (known as HSDPA) but it is much more expensive than 3! With one of the other networks it would cost me £45 a month for the same connection speed and download limit!

They have different contract lengths to choose from so watch out! If you want the modem for free then you have to have a long contract...

I chose the 12 month contract and as a 3 customer already I got the USB modem at a discounted price - you just enter a few numbers found on your bill online when you place your order and they knock some money off the cost of the modem.

I got it on a deal with 3, but is out for normal retail sale, I think.
