Why does it bother you? Just go out and buy a 160GB laptop SATA drive and fit it into your PS3. Its legal and doesn't void the warranty.

would the hard drive not have to be formatted in a special way for the PS3?

The hard drive would be a UPNP device, so if Sony have incorporated USB properly they should have also incorporated support for common filing and formatting standards. But then again we are talking about Sony aren't we?

The PS3 will format the drive when it detects a new drive.

Just make sure its a laptop hard drive and SATA.

Cheaper? What about all the extras that are hidden with the 360 which come as standard on the PS3?

Can you upgrade your Elite hard drive? No. Not without invalidating the warranty.

Not sure the 80GB is actually coming out in UK at all. Like someone already said, just buy a 60GB model and buy a new HDD, you can get 120GB, 250GB, or 300GB HDD's for decent prices.

That was a good move by Sony to use standard laptop HDD's, means you can pick up one at a great price unlike paying tons for HDD specifically made for the console (eg. £130 for a 120GB HDD for 360)
