CES 2009: Sony teases with high-quality PS3 3D

We've heard from many of you that 3D technology is something you're interested in seeing at CES, and Sony has one of the most impressive displays of 3D at their booth... but you won't learn anything about it.
"Don't get caught up with specs," the Sony representative told me. "We're not going to talk about specifications. This is just a look at what 3D could look like if Sony decided to move in this direction." The idea was just to show the technology to people, to see if they would be interested in sitting at home, wearing a dorky set of black glasses, watching content in 3D.
I couldn't pry details about how the 3D affect was achieved, or if the display could turn any source into 3D, but what's clear is that, glasses or no, the 3D affect is amazing. Sony showed off Wipeout HD running in true 3D, and I was ready to whip out my credit card right there. Frank and I both agreed, this was one of the best demos of 3D technology we have ever seen.
As a bonus, here's a picture of Frank modeling the glasses.

"3D has come a long way, hasn't it?" the representative asked me. Sure it has, but give me some details. We can't get excited if all the press gets is a short tech demo. The crowd around the display was large, and filled with "ooohs" and "aaaahs."
This probably won't be the last 3D display we see at CES, but as a proof of concept, our appetite is whetted. Sony claims that they have Gran Turismo Prologue playable on the display, but I just wanted to take one home. The company is hedging its bets about how long it will take to get this level of 3D into your home, but if this tiny taste was any indication, there is a ton of promise.
We're promised more 3D surprises from Sony's even larger press event tomorrow, so hopefully we'll get some more information.
This is a very good news, but I din't understand just one thing, is there a screen which allow you to watch the games in 3d or it is possible to achieve this effect on every Tv? Sometimes ago I watched on sky a 3d show whith a pair of sunglasses with just 1 lens and the 3d effects were very amazing I hope it will be the same thing with games.
im not 100% sure tbh i dont know how it works but they would have to research a way to get it without havin to buy a tv i dont think many ppl wud buy a new tv for that feature i think they will make it optional on ps4 awesome yet agen sony leading the way in inovation
So I imagine it's the same technology being used to some extent. As for whether this is the future... It's hard to tell without seeing a working demo, how much more can you really get from seeing 3D images?, I'm still hoping Nintendo do something similar to that Johnny Chung video with the headtracking software. I think the future lies in controls, not in display.

Here in the US, some broadcasters are experimenting with a 3D signal broadcast through cable. A couple of NFL games were broadcast in 3D in select locations, but it requires a special television set.
Some live events, including opera broadcasts and circus performances, already pop up on screens at theaters across the country.
Next week's demonstration will also include television displays, to show what might one day be available in homes. While 3-D television sets are already available in stores, mainly for the handful of DVDs available in 3-D, the industry is still working on technical standards for 3-D.
That process raises the possibility that 3-D TV sets purchased today might not be compatible with programs aired in a few years' time. Just as in theaters, home viewers must wear special 3-D glasses.
There have been many attempts to get 3D gaming going on PCs over the years, and none of them have worked out.
There have been 3D glasses (not like this, two screens built into a headset), several games have let you set it to work like old 3D films (a red image, the main image, and a blue image), in fact a freeware game was featured in this months PC Gamer, Super Hypercube.
If it isn't actually 3D, then I don't think people will be interested. Console gaming is seen as quite casual on the whole. Casual people don't want to wear glasses. Dancemats, WiiFit boards and plastic instruments are fine, not anything you actually have to wear. (i.e. another idea I don't see working is those suits that track your movement.)
I admit the idea is cool, but short of some form of holographic image, I don't see it working.
Sorry if it's an old thread but I've just read on a PC magazine that the first game to use this 3d effect will be released in this year by Blizzard. Unfortunately you need a particular Tv to watch it with a pair of polar lens. This new TV/monitors are called stereagraphic monitors and consist of two LCD screens, one project the image for the left eye the other for the right eye. The advantage of using this monitors is that the graphic card doesn't have to render two images for each frame of the game but the same image is shown with two different angles directly on the monitor.
Surfing through the Internet I couldn't find more informations so I'm not sure if the news I read on that magazine was just a rumor or if it's an official news, I hope it's not true .
