Default Impressions on tiger woods 2008

i love golf games, and as wii sports golf was on the light side i was looking for a solid golf game to get my teeth into.

after much reading and going between super swing and woods i went for the latter.

neither was really getting me juiced up though, i knew super swing had its flaws and tiger was gonna be the usual soulless experience.

so i bought tiger with the express intention of trading it in come march 08 when "we love golf" comes out (mmm makers of mario golf and capcom)

first impressions were exactly as i expected, the front end doesn't even make a nod to the fact its a wii game with very fiddley icons and fonts. after creating my golfer through the "create golfer" i set up a stroke match for a quick 9 holes.

The first thing that struck me was the muted colour palette, i know its a "sim" but it's so washed out and lifeless. the environments are nice to look at but don't seem to offer anything more than basic functionality.

the swing mechanics are nice and IMO bascially make the game, nice and subtle, occasionally not quite right but solid nevertheless.

me and a mate played for 5 hours straight and had i superb golf experience. but a lot of that has to do with the mechanics of the wii and having a good laugh with a real person. playing in 1 player is a very empty experience, and i can't play for more than 30 mins on my own.

I generally don't like the way EA operates, their games suffer from the yearly churn outs. stuff getting taken away only to be put back in only to be stripped back down when new hardware comes out. I don't really like supporting this by even buying such games, but i was desperate and tiger woods fills the golf fix in a functional but devoid of emotion kind of way.

i haven't gone into detail about the ins and outs of this game because it's very hard to be enthused by a game when the developers clearly aren't. having said that, if you're just looking for the basics and are planning on just playing with friends it's a good game. if you can wait then "we love golf" is gonna be the one, i only got this for the interim and it does exactly what i was expecting.

soulless golf with solid functionality.

6.8/10 Good

Nice review

Agree with what your saying about EA. I have issues with them, they make token gestures with some of their Wii ports by just tacking on waggle controls to games from other consoles.

I really didn't get on with this game, it left me pining for a game designed from the ground up around the Wii remote. I'm hoping We Love Golf is going to be that game! Golf on the Wii has got the potential to be genre defining. Done properly it could be mind blowing.

Nice review Tetsu, very succint. I totally agree on the criticism of EA. I'm a Battlefield2 player (PC), and much as I love that game, I can't stand BF2142. Another EA rehash, only worse!

I like golf games myself, and was wondering wether to get this. One question :-
Is TW08 any better than 07?

I'd not heard about "We love golf" until I read this thread, so thx for the heads up.

Games owned :- Wii Sports, Super Paper Mario, Metroid Prime 3, M&S Olympics, Links X-bow training

i've got this game and i must say your review hits the nail on the head. it does fill the void for a soley golf based game and it's enjoyable at times, but the career mode doesn't capture me enough to keep me playing more than an hour tops and the game should be more Wii friendly, colours and menus look a little off. i'll play it on and off, and i'm happy with the game, but it could be so much better.

Good review!
