Default Orb Media Streamer Review by pinkieH

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:...photos/orb.jpg
The orb media streamer is a program that you can use to stream files from your pc to your wii by simply creating a account and logging into your account on you wii. It realy is as simple as that! You can stream :
Videos
Pictures
Films
Music
and also listen to the
Radio.

Just tried out orb. Its really cool and fast buffering times as well it buffered a hour music set in just under 5 minutes. I have scrubs season 2 on my pc so i also uploaded that and the quality isn't brilliant and the buffering times are just a bit slower than music files but what do you expect for free.

Sound Quality 9/10
Video Quality 6/10
Buffering Times (sound) 10/10
Buffering Times (video) 8.5/10
Interface easiness 10/10

Overall 43.5/50

(sorry for the lines through the tv its a crt)

Nice review, never occurred to me to put a non game review in here

I think the Orb software is really good, especially as its free!

My Dad had been wanting to buy a dedicated music streamer so he could play his library of music on his PC through his hifi. When he saw Orb operating on my Nintendo Wii in my flat, he decided to get a Wii instead (bear in mind he was prepared to pay a couple of hundred quid for a streamer, its a bargain!)

He’s got a decent hifi system, and the sound quality he gets streaming through Orb is excellent. The best way of using it is to set up playlists on the PC, then play those through the Wii. This works best as it can be a bit fiddly selecting songs / albums through the Wii interface.

Streaming songs seems to push the wireless network to its limit (the amount buffered is always only a fraction ahead of whats playing), so I can see how video files would put a strain on it. But it really works well for music and photos.

As a word of warning I’d say that I found it a bit fiddly getting the firewall settings to allow Orb to directly access the Wii, at first it was blocked and attempting to stream via the internet which just doesn’t work. With some extensive trawling through the help pages though got there in the end.

Overall I’d say its definitely worth a go if you’ve got music and photos on a PC in a separate room and you fancy playing them through your Wii. Think of all the space you can save, just stick your CD collection onto the computer then they are accessible at the click of the Wii Remote!

I just started using this again, and it seems to work flawlessly for me. videos stream very well, and music plays perfectly. it's useful if i want to listen to some music via my hi-fi downstairs. little fiddly to setup but well worth using.

Good review. Hadn't thought of reviewing something other than games.

Haven't tried this yet because I'm concerned about bandwidth usage (I'm on a fixed tarrif), it's s shame that you have to stream the media out from your PC onto the Internet and then back in again onto the Wii so you get a double hit on your bandwidth usage. As the PC and Wii are on the same network I'd prefer a solution that streamed directly, you'd get better performance for those videos too. Anyone know of anything like that?

Orb can stream directly between your PC and your Wii. Thats what I use it for.

When I first tried streaming with Orb, my firewall blocked the direct streaming and it streamed through the internet to my Wii. This was incredibly slow however.

Once I got my firewall to stop doing this it allowed Orb to stream directly to the Wii, with much better results!

It's good, but sadly not that good so I gather. Still needs to be FLV or similar (though my scalp is itching so I may be corrected in the next few minutes.....).

God appeared to have reacted badly to Bede's prayer for electricity to charge his DS

Weeeeeellllll.... kind of. I think you'd have to have the film actually saved as a file on your PC / laptop to stream it.

I only stream music with it, so I don't know much about the video streaming side.

It is cool though! Its so good to be able to play all the stuff on the PC through the Wii. Quality bit of software.

Great, is there a setting somewhere to make it do this?

I believe its called Direct Stream, its an option within the properties somewhere. I'm not actually at my home PC at the moment, I'll have a look for you later on when I'm at home. Can't remember exactly without checking!

I do remember it took me quite a lot of fiddling to get it set up properly to do this, mainly getting my firewall to let it through. I used the help on Orbs website quite a bit as I remember. Was worth it though.
