Default Wii Mans Reviews: Zelda Twilight Princess (24th April 2007)

Believe it or not, I have never played a Zelda game in my life! It keeps on cropping up in conversation on this forum so the other week I finally decided to buy a copy and see what all the fuss is about…

My initial impressions are that the graphics are some of the best I have seen on the Wii so far and the in-game sound effects are spot on (I have a 5.1 surround sound system which makes the game sound great)!

The image above doesn’t do the game justice and if you do decide to purchase this game you will not be disappointed!

Both the controller and nunchuck are required for this game and so far I have found them to be very responsive and control your character and the horse very well! If you push the analogue stick just a small amount then she trots along, push it all the way she pulls her front legs in to the air and then gallops away as shown in the image below:

The idea behind this game is quite simple, you wander around talking to people and when you do so, you will find some of them have a few problems that you are able to sort out for them, kinda like mini games if you like.

So far I have found a babies cradle that a monkey stole and when I gave it back to the mother I got a fishing rod that one of the characters in game friends had made for him. I’ve used a piece of grass to call a hawk (or some kind of bird anyway) that attacked the bees nest that was causing someone problems and I have even helped someone herd some goats on horseback!

There is plenty in this game to keep everyone busy and entertained! If (like me) you get quite frustrated when you get stuck in this type of game and don’t know what to do, there are plenty of game guides on the internet that can help you out!

Unlike other games I have played so far, this game does not appear to be repetitive and is not something you will get easily bored with!

WARNING: Controversial Statement Coming Up…

Although I would have to say this is one of the best games for the Wii so far (Excite Truck, Raymans Raving Rabbids are also great games), this did not quite have the X factor or WOW! factor that I was expecting after all the hype that I had gotten from the comments on this forum.

That said, this is still a great game – but maybe not everyones cup of tea. To be honest if there weren’t any game guides out there I would probably give up at some point and stop playing the game!

Wii Mans Game Rating
==================

Fun Factor: 8/10 - If you like puzzles then this game is for you!
Playability: 8/10 - Both controller and nunchuck are used in this game.
Gameplay: 8/10 – Great fun if you like this kind of game.
Graphics: 9/10 – Some of the best I have seen so far!
Sound/Music: 9/10 – Some of the best I have heard so far!

Overall 42/50

How do you hook up a 5.1 system to a Wii?

I have my 5.1 connected to my Xbox (via Coax digital) but AFAIK there is no digital output on the Wii?

By using the high definition cable that you hook up to a HD Ready TV. There are three connections to the TV and two for audio, I have them plugged in to my Panasonic 5.1 system, have selected the Surround option on the Wii sound settings and have fantastic sound!

Not sure if it is 'proper' 5.1 or not but I do have sound from all speakers and it does sound great.

So maybe one of two things are happening here.

1. When you plug in a Component cable, the audio switches to digital out, sent thru the l/r audio plugs. (not likely IMO).

2. Your 5.1 box (like mine) can accept a stereo connection and spatialises (is that a word?) L/R across the 5 speakers, and sends the low freqs to the sub. This wouldn't provide discrete 5.1 audio but it would still sound OK. (more likely).

Thats basically what I assumed, the Wii is Dolby Pro Logic (I believe) which is 2.1 so I wont be getting proper 5.1 surroun just simulated/spatulisation - my system still makes the Wii-ing experience that little bit better!

As I understand it the Wii outputs in Dolby ProLogic 2, which is basically a pseudo surround, or in other words fake!

Where Dolby 5.1 has five separate channels of sound (the sub being the .1!) ProLogic 1 and 2 uses the left and right channel to create, what is effectively a 3.1 experience. (Left + Right + Mono centre and surround)

Not as good as 5.1, obviously, but still better than the sound you get from your average telly!

Re Wiimans review - How far have you got so far in the game? Sounds as though you've only just scraped the surface! Theres another 40 or so hours to go.

Don't give up...

Don't worry I wont be giving up just yet! I'm enjoying it so far and its seems quite varied and you are right, I have only just scraped the surface - I have a long way to go yet!!!

not a very in depth review but i do agree with the score, it totals up to 84/100 if im not mistaken which is very fair.

Everyone ravs about how great this game is and its the best out on the WII but i really hope not ... i just played it for the first time this weekend gone and was slightly dissapointed, i've only played about an hour and a half but it hasnt grabbed me at all yet ... in fact i turned it off becuase i was bored!

Its not amazing graphics wise and the motion controls dont really bring anything to it that an analogue stick of any other console couldnt bring.

Anyway the audio conectors on your component cable are just analogue audio lines red for right channel and white for left.

Basically your amp will but upsampling the 2 channel signal to 5.1.

Pro logic is just 2 channesl, Without a digital connection the wii can only output 2.0 as even the low level sub channel needs a dedicated connection for analogue

I hate to say it, but I haven't played Zelda since writing this review!

Like you, all I had heard was people going on about how great this game is/was and in my opinion they were making it out to be a much better game than it actually is. I wonder if it is to do with the fact that this is just one game in the Zelda series and perhaps reminiscing has a part to play...
