The game is great but even people who like it realise that sometimes items have been added for no good reason (pow block) and that the unreasonable availability of blue shells to the racers behind you produces a feeling of injustice.
Also if you are racing at the front I am bored of getting banana skins all the time (with the odd green shell) give me invincibility occasionally or something to annoy everyone behind me like they are bugging me.
Personally I don't mind the cloud or the mega mushroom but I want to be an invincible giant not one which can't knock over a cow.
New tracks are really good (except rainbow road - sure I'll stay on it one day) and the reduction in the effectiveness of power slides is good from a racing purist point of view.
In one player the game offers very little (no real challenge) but in multi-player its superb.
So last night I played for hours until I unlocked 8 more tracks only to discover that some of them are re-hashed from previous additions. I thought that must make you long-time players really frustrated because it's like you're paying money for something you already had. And not only that *I* was able to come in 1st or 2nd in just about all of those original tracks. If I could do it, then you Wii-Pros must find the game pretty boring - or you will soon. It's probably only the WiFi aspect of this game that will keep it interesting for you.
Actually rehashing of old tracks has been just something they have done for the last 3 MK games and I don't honestly mind. There are some great tracks in there and this really is one of the best mixes of old and new.
But yeah; I will never unlock everything as I get very bored with single player. Even the time trial ghost runs just don't feel 'fun' now that I have the ability to click on a button next to it and race against real people via online.

It takes too much energy to turn the wheel?
A minute ago you were moaning that the game wasn't realistic enough
I am not sure how others feel on this but it isn't that I want MK to be a realistic racer by any means... in fact the reason I play it is for the insanity of it and bizarre weapons; but I think in the wii version they are just a touch unfair. all of the other times generally if you were 1st 15 meters before the line you would win where as with this one it seems as though you can be stripped of victory by an insane barrage of weaponry or just cheap AI in general. It is going to make 3*ing very very tough in a frustrating rather than enjoyable manner and to me that actually detracts from the casual feel.
As for the wheel I like that it is there for those that want to use it; but for me the fun of cornering isn't the hand gestures but the driving line that you take - which is easier to achieve via the analog stick. But again; that is simply subjective

I have had to deal with a major family issue hence the lack of online again :\ (it's all to do with my sister's theft if anyone remembers from before)

In the original, and the N64 version, the AI was a cheaty cheat. I remember the last time that I played both versions as if it were yesterday.. .. .. .. my gaming buddy of the time and I were indulging in some 2 player action, neck and neck, heading for the line, both on full mushroom boost .. .. .. and a computer controlled character just wandered past us to win
It was only when I got persuaded to buy the DS version that I came back to MK .. .. .. I'd promised myself never to play again. Now that I'm older and don't care so much about winning I can take the unfairness of the AI with a pinch of salt .. ..
Your views are much like my views towards most of the Zelda series, whilst many find it hard to take in - some games just don't appeal to certain people.
Anyway - I find it a little hard to give a review when you even admit you went into this game already pre-judging it...A review is meant to be unbiased, but anyway - it's still nice to hear a few mixed opinions!
My one real concern with MK wii is no online speak - this is a MAJOR floor compared to what have could been, meaning most communication is lost.

It isn't really a review... It just made more sense to have it here than elsewhere...
The article is completely laiden with unbalanced opinion... The full MK review is still up for grabs... This was just really the ramblings of a Mario Kart Veteran and his feelings towards the latest edition.

Voice communication on mario kart? I dont really find that neccesary but maybe exchange the preset phrases with something where we could talk on our own.
My only problem(aside from the proliferation of last lap blue shells, which can be right out of order) is that if they wanted you to use the wheel they should've made it compulsory so that you always race against people with the same set up. It cannot be fair if some use a gamecube contoller(which I find the easiest) or the nunchuck/wiimote while you try the wheel.
Also, if this was the case, you'd eventually get so good with the wheel(which I'm gonna use from now on as I've decided that only those too desperate to win use other controls)-it's becoming a matter of pride for myself. Why not try to do it as they intended, just because it feels harder doesn't make it any less fun so long as everyone else isn't "cheating" with classic controls. I get the same gripe playing UT3 on PS3 against those guys that are PC shooter nuts and use mouse and keyboard(why not just play on PC if that's your game?
Same applies here for me and I just wish there was a way to ensure everyone online uses the same controller in any given match. Even the rankings could be different for every control scheme-so you could be king of the wheel or, instead, queen of the GC controller. However, pitting both kinds against each other can't ever prove who's the best Karter.
Otherwise just as good as any MK game. The online works really well for a Wii game and this bodes really well(along with Brawls success) for upcoming games like COD:WaW and The Conduit that want to be huge online like COD4 was elsewhere..
I agree with most of what's been said about the 1-player mode, particularly the blue shells - funnily enough, if I can create a large enough gap between myself and the AI characters, it doesn't seem to be a problem any more. But what's with the POW block?! Drives me insane.
mastiff, I do agree with your point about the wheel. I've only been playing a couple of days so far and I keep pressing the D-pad then wondering why I'm not turning! Takes some getting used to, and I don't doubt that it's less responsive than using a Gamecube controller, but heck you have to admit it's fun! In fact I might go and try playing with a GC controller now, just for comparison's sake.
The main reason I bought MK Wii (other than it being part of the package I got) was for the multi-player, and the same has been true of previous MK incarnations for me including DS, although I have to admit I certainly prefer the DS 1-player to the Wii's version. MK's a great game for when you've got a few mates round, it doesn't take itself too seriously and battles are good multiplayer fun. To go back to the point about the wheel, I think it's here - playing with friends in the same room as you - that it really comes into its own.
Can't comment on online play, haven't been brave/confident enough to try it yet...!

The blue shells in general don't bother me, but it is annoying when you are 1st for 3 laps and before the finish line is touched - one smacks you and you're then 5th. It is how the computer manages to conjour one up that is annoying. It is annoying online too, but not too much so.
Concerning POW blocks...I don't think we need those in the game, nor the thundercloud or squid. The bulletbills are okay and useful - but very cheat-like at the same time. Too many items in MK Wii kind of ruins the race aspect and it seems a little like a Smash bros game with you sat in vehicles at times.
I'd try online! I am not sure how the scoring system online actually works...I know you seem to lose more points than you gain for coming first...
Current adventure games to play and complete to as close to 100% as possible - Okami and Paper Mario 64.
