So, my first game review in a long while...Perhaphs due to the fact people already review games before I even buy the game! Which brings me onto a clear point here, why hasn't there already been a review for this game? and why's it so underground?
On to the review: The game does what it says on the tin. It's much like the old title 'Asteroids' where you control a small ship, shooting aliens and ships for high scores, so in that respect the game has a distinct old style feel to it. Nostalgic for some, but I was new to the experience yet I found it amazing.
Gameplay: Simple controls, move with the nunchuk, shoot with the wiimote, what more is to ask of this? it can also be controlled by the classic controller, which I hear has even better handling, but so far, so good where handling and general controls are concerned.
The game starts of in a 'training' type galaxy to get you used to the games general style. I believe players can immediately realise whether they enjoy the game from here on. If it's not for you then you can instantly tell, as the game could be called 'repetitive' by some critics. Anyway, you start with a basic 'drone' which is updatable through 'geoms' (currency). The drone is a small bot which helps make life easier; E.g. Shooting in a turret like motion, or defending you by sweeping enemies away. As the game progresses, so does your skill which enables you to unlock new galaxies, medals and high scores which can be viewed on the games wifi leader board.
Other than the 'mission' based part of the game, there's also the classic 'Geometry wars evolved' mini game which I hear is the same as the Xbox live game which is hugely liked. So, there's much to do here, essentially it's just an old-skool shooter with a few extras, but there's lots to do hear and the gameplay is highly addictive! Anyway - the virtual console shows old-skool is very popular.
8/10.
Graphics: The graphics aren't going to really blow you away as the game is a basic 2D space shooter. But the development has worked hard here to spruce up the overall game design. Throughout Geometry wars shows a green and black theme which works well. Plus, the actual gameplay is shown as very bright and striking. There isn't really much going on here as I've said before, but when in the game and surrounded by hords of enemies, the graphics point out whats what and boldly shows what's going on. It's a nice feature and adds to the polished feel of the game. Again, well done for making the game visually stylish!
8/10.
Cash value: I've added this as I now find it very important when chosing games. I feel it does inspire feelings towards how highly you enjoy a game. As for Geometry wars, I feel it would but considered by many as quite bad, if it sold at over £30. However, it's half that price and as a result is considered by many as a real bargain. The game is nicely polished and is fun too, something I find missing in more and more newer games. At £15-20 you can't go wrong. The reviews speak for themselves, for a budget title, Geometry wars is one of the best!
10/10.
Overview: A great game. Shows that retro is still alive and kicking. It also shows that games
can be simple to work and that old-skool is still around. For the money involved and what you get, this game is very cheap. Perhaphs this game works through to an experienced development team which shows 3rd party wii titles can be good. I feel Geometry wars gives hope to other 3rd party games on a budget. I still have many hours to go through this game and am thoroughly enjoying it. A very good game which is also cheap, what more can you ask for? Which begs my final question...Why is this game, like a few others, so weakly advertised and so unkown?
Total: 45/50. Yes it needs a bit of work, but it's extremely well exucuted and enjoyable!
