British rape judicial issue

Hello everyone,

Reading the Washington post this morning, I came across this article, and frankly, I was shocked. However, I did immediately think of you, and had to post it. Please tell me if you can read the article. This is the printable version, so you shouldn't have to log in to view it.

In Britain, Rape Cases Seldom Result in a Conviction

Even going with the optomistic estimate that 20% of rapes in Britain are reported, this means that there is only a 1% total conviction rate. (The report rate is approximately the same stateside, but a much higher percentage of reported rapes lead to conviction)

So, I send this out to you, my Wiitalk people: any thoughts on the situation? Is a woman who dresses in a sexy manner asking to be raped? Would you call it rape at that point, or would you say she just got slutty and regretted it later? What about age considerations? Anything else I missed?

Since I'm a woman, you can probably guess my feelings on the situation, but I don't want to taint your opinions, so I'll keep mine back for now. And please, don't pull any punches.

On a sillier note...your judges still wear white powder wigs? How can you go to court and not crack up when addressing the judge?

As for the topic, I didn't know the statistic for conviction was that low, but it honestly doesn't surprise me. The more of a **** you are in this country, the better you're treated.

I think there's a very very thin line between dressing responsible and dressing so you show everything, the more you show the more likely our going to get raped, because this is the way this world has gone. No one asks to be raped, i can't see why they would, they might not be acting very responsibly when it comes to clothing.

On the other hand, i think a women needs to wear what she want's within reason, and not be afraid of being raped because of it, if she wants to go out with a mini-skirt then go for it, it's just a shame there are people out there that see it as a sign to rape them.

If she doesn't want it then ofcourse it's rape, no matter how "slutty" she got. She's stupid for being slutty, but each to their own.

*edit* i failed at this one, can't quite word it properly. Once again, there is a very thin line between dressing to look sexy because you want to, and dressing to get just attention from men, which ofcourse picks up the wrong attention aswell. (yeah, that was worded poorly lol)

I didn't post it to start a huge debate over the issue. I thought you guys would find it interesting, especially that the issue was being covered by a US newspaper (granted, a pretty big one), and I wanted to see if the supposed "public opinions" presented in the article were accurate. I'm not saying that there aren't the ideas of "she just regrets it/she was asking for it/she just got slutty/etc" in the US - but I found it interesting that the article basically said that you won't get a conviction in Britain because the jury will question why she was with the guy, if she really didn't consent, etc.

But seriously, it is a little awkward. I can't really say anything, as I don't know your basic rights over there, but being raped at 15 and being Acquittled. Now that is just, excusive my language, Nuckin futs.

The following is a 100% true story from an intenational newspaper that my boss showed me a few months back.
(I cant remember thepaper or id post a link)

A young women (mid 20's) in Iran (i think it was there) got into a strangers car in town and was taken out of the way and raped by 3 men.

After reporting the rape the 3 men were caught and punished accordingly, but the lady recieved a public lashing for it as it is against the law to be anywhere alone with a man who you are not
