Exclamation You really don't want to be a sex offender in Louisiana!

Just wondered what people think about this little article...

FOXNews.com - Louisiana Lawmakers Consider Castration for Sex Offenders - Politics | Republican Party | Democratic Party | Political Spectrum

So would it deter you?
Do you think a rapist should be castrated?
Will the idea spread across the States?
Could it ever reach the UK?

Discuss...

I dont think it would deter them to be perfectly honest, but then I dont know what goes on inside the mind of sex offenders.

question 2. YES, and so should Paedophiles (sp?)

Question 3. Nope, each state being governed by its own laws and rules has been the way for many years. The south has always been more forward when it comes to capital punishment. Whilst I feel that capital punishment is a good thing in certain cases, in most it is not ethically right to take a persons life, or any other part of them.

Question 4. No were too liberal... If your lucky here, youll get a widescreen tv, nintendo wii, and a bunch of mates to play against Oops, sorry thats prison

A

lol goku, true about the UK.

Castrated should work, but capital punishment should be brought back. The reason it was abandoned was because we couldn't prove who did it, accidentally killing the wrong people... now we have forensics and such, we can tell if its the person or not. DNA can't lie... so it should be bought back

^^^^ Completely agree with you. Just as long as its 100% certain that the person is guilty. Time to bring it back

Currently owned games: Mario Party 8 - Endless Ocean - SSX Blur - Harry Potter (Order of the Pheonix) - Pirates of the Carribean - My Sims - Super Fruit Fall - Pangya Golf - Barnyard - Warioware Smooth Moves - Wii Play - Mario Strikers - and of course good old Wii Sports - I have also borrowed Zelda from a friend

To answer that a bit at a time.. .. ..

DNA can't lie .. .. .. but the ability to determine who the DNA belongs to is not as accurate as you are lead to believe.

DNA can't lie .. .. .. .. no, but incompetent or desperate for a conviction coppers can lie.

Forensics can't tell you if it's the person .. .. .. what forensics can do is (to the best of it's ability) determine if there is a match between two groups of samples.

Capital Punishment was abandoned because it is barbaric and makes us as a society no better than those we execute.

Capital Punishment is not a deterrent. Don't believe me? Look to see how many Americans are on death row awaiting execution for murder. Were they deterred?

To answer Sue's 4 questions .. .. ..

No - I think that the majority of rapes are not pre-meditated.
Yes - for the protection of the rest of society
Yes - maybe not the coastal states, but the central ones.
Yes - we love all things American don't we???

I think paedophilia is a separate issue, and possibly one too delicate to get into here and now.

However, let's consider the options for sex offenders here.

Unfortunately, they know they stand a very good chance of getting away with it, as often the victim is too traumatised to go through the ordeal of the police interrogations and courtroom accusations. Unfortunately this remains the case whatever the punishment.

Prison doesn't seem to put anyone off these days. It is a free home, with comfy conditions and as already said above, games consoles, DVDs etc all provided. (If you are from America and reading this in disbelief, we're not joking!!!)

Chemical castration seems more humane than chopping bits off, but has a lot of complications. Men get violent and over sexually active if they produce too much testosterone, so they need to receive a hormone which reduces their testosterone level and increase their progesterone (gently female hormone) level.

The offender must be injected monthly/quarterly (depending on the dose) with Depo-Provera (a birth control drug when used on women!). Side effects, which occur in some people, are depression, fatigue, diabetes, and blood clots.

If this method is used, how do you ensure that the offender receives his injection regularly? Should he be restrained, tied down, and injected against his will? And if he misses one injection, it actually increases his testosterone level, creating a surge in production, making him more likely than ever to offend! Also in test cases, it has been proven that the offender is angered by being given the injection, and gets violent anyway, resulting in further non-sexual offences.

Physical castration could produce the same backlash from the offender. Let's face it, you wouldn't be too chuffed at the idea, would you?

Which brings us to Capital Punishment. Anyone at all uncertain about that phrase - it means a death sentence.

Personally I am in favour of capital punishment, where the verdict is beyond doubt.

Anyone who feels they have the right to violate someone in such a terrible way, possibly destroying their life as a consequence, does not deserve to live in my opinion.

It's a matter of respect. If you drop to that level, where you feel able to take life or destroy a person's diginity in such an extreme way, you deserve to die for it. Then there cannot be any risk of re-offence of any kind.

So that's where I stand on the subject. What about the rest of you?

Well, hopefully you'll learn something from this thread, nutter.

But just remember, that if you are old enough to vote, then you should gain an opinion, whichever way. Because one day you may need to vote on something as big as this.

Or the general election might involve picking between a party who would bring back capital punishment and one who would prevent it from happening.

That's the whole point of democracy, and why we need to preserve it.

Keep debating, people. It's a good discussion.
