Default Speed Guns :o

So heres the story...

I dropped my girlfriend home the other night, and as i was driving home, out of the village, I turn the corner and theres a policeman pointing a speed gun thingy right at me. eep. It was dark and I hardly saw him until I was past him, and I didnt have time enough to react.

Now I might have been driving a teeny bit fast, but thats because I was coming out of the village, and the road turns from a 30mph to a 60mph. And I bet he was there because he saw me in the car park I was saying goodbye in a few minutes earlier (because I did see a police car drive around the car park before I left) as I doubt there would just happen to be a little man standing there on a tuesday evening at the end of the village. So anyway, what I was asking is, is there any way I could get busted? or would he have come after me?

silly boy

You will know in 14 days. I think they are obliged to send you a ticket within this time-frame.

Hope everything is ok. If you are right and you only did a "tiny bit" fast, you shouldn't have much to worry about. What do you drive anyway?

I am not sure how the British Police work, but here in the US, if they don't stop you then you are Ok. I doubt he would have gone through the trouble to write down your license plate number and chase you down when he could just turn on his siren.

Right the rules:

If there was signs showing that speed detection was being used then he will have a ticket comming to you , as the gun will have recorded it.

However if there were no signs, (whether perminent or tempoary) then they should have had to follow you, because, the highway code stipulates that they need to make motorists aware of their presence, if there remiaing in a static position.

I hope this helps. If you do get a ticket, then you can do a couple of things,

Ask to see when the speed gun was last calibrated, if it wasnt calibrated within 24hours of catching you then you can prove that it is innaccurate.

2nd, if they had no signs to say they were there, (perm or temp) then you can contest it as, them trying to get motorists unfairly.

3rd (a bit late now) but come to a complete stop whilst they are trying to get your data, and it frazzles the speed guns. Only works on the hand held guns.

So I hope this was of some help to you.. I would suggest trying to find the rules in the Highway code, as you will need a copy of these if you get a ticket... to show the police.

As for points, you can be done for speeding once in your first 2 years, more than once and its goodbye licence, and then a 70min resit test which is not only harder than your initial test but also more pressure as it lasts twice as long

^^Nice info^^

The only thing I'd disagree with is the caught once in the first 2 years .. .. .. that's if you are doing a little bit over the speed limit (say 40 in a 30).. .. .. If you are doing over 100mph it's an instant ban if you get caught.. .. .. If you get stopped by traffic police the things you do and say will determine the severity of your punishment.. .. .. if you upset them they could tag on a dangerous driving (or any number of car faults) that would lead to 6 points and a ban.

yeh you should be okay then really. If you can be 100% sure there were no, Speed Camera signs, around the check then you should be sorted.

The car park where you were... was it a pub by chance?

You wouldn't get banned for doig 40 in a 30 anyway. A similar thing happened to me last year. Came off a main road (50 limit) into a 30 zone. Unfortunately didn't notice the police speed van round the corner. Luckily for me I was braking at the time so when the ticket came through (within 2 weeks) it showed I was only doing 35mph.

I had to fill the police form in and send it back (you have to confirm that it was you driving etc). Then they wrote to me and luckily offered me a Speed Awareness course which costs £70. Either that or 3 points and a £60 fine. Easy choice really.

The course is just a glorified theory exam, but you don't need to pass or anything. The woman at the corse said that if the limit is 30mph you're safe upto 33mph. 34 and 35mph you get the choice to take the course (provided you haven't been caught in the last three years) and anythin over that it the points and fine.

Good luck mate, hope it turns out ok!
