I think you have to make a choice whether its publishing or designing you want to go for. Designing definitely needs qualifications but not so in publishing. You will need good literary skills and writing skills though. You have to try and write more. Why don't you write us a review.
Games Master is running a competition at the moment to win "A Day in the GamesMaster Office".
To win, you have to write a 150 word review of your favourite game. It can be any format, brand new or ancient. The best review will bag the prize. It could be the start of your dream job in games. But you have to be

Although, I'm sorry to say that if you limit yourself to Portsmouth, I don't think you'll get very far. Things like this needs you to go out and seek the different opportunities whereever you can find it.
