Following on from my life story in Sue's topic in this section...

I'm looking for a new job for around September time in Portsmouth and would LOVE to work in the Gaming industry, designing games, or even the magazines that reveiw them.

Ive looked at the company Future which seems to be the main one that creates the magazines I buy but there isnt any jobs going there near me. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried getting a job in game design, or art design for magazines?

I have no qualifications with design but have had around 3 years experience with Photoshop 7 and am about to set myself up for a course in CAD (hopefully if I manage to get any spare time from my current job

)

I will do almost anything to get a job in game design for when I move to Portsmouth. I always fancied myself as an architectural designer but never got round to finding out the information about it, but now find myself more interested in game design instead.
If anyone has any information about anything then you would be a great help!

I think you have to make a choice whether its publishing or designing you want to go for. Designing definitely needs qualifications but not so in publishing. You will need good literary skills and writing skills though. You have to try and write more. Why don't you write us a review.

Games Master is running a competition at the moment to win "A Day in the GamesMaster Office".

Although, I'm sorry to say that if you limit yourself to Portsmouth, I don't think you'll get very far. Things like this needs you to go out and seek the different opportunities whereever you can find it.

I have this months Game Master magazine and have read up on the competition, but it is not publishing I wanted to do, so for making it a little unclear

I meant design of a magazine as in the layout etc.
The competition is for anyone up to the age of 20 anyway and I wam 21 so couldnt do it even if I wanted to.

I know it wont be exactly in Portsmouth most likely too I am willing to travel for this job though too. I am just creating a CV at the moment. My first one ever!

this is so hard starting out as though Im 16 and just left school. Its what it feels like

No they are an awful company, theres much much better people to work for out there... like erm well anyone

hey hey! erm have you searched online for what other companys are in your area? i live in warwickshire and i work for Rare i am a games tester part time which is cool, last year i was workin on viva pinata but its a good place apparently to start in the gaming industry Rare take on people straight out of uni or what ever.

Why are they such an awful company to work for?

I'm finding it hard to find many places to apply to.

This is really the first time Ive done this, the only other time I had to apply for a job I just walked into the co-op at 15 and asked if there were any jobs going, he asked me a few questions and I was working by the saturday!

Creating a CV is a lot harder than I thought too!

How did you first get your job as a games tester Mark?

I am trying to search for some more, but I dont actually live in Portsmouth so need to do research to find out about the surrounding areas and place names to search for. I live in Wales right now but will be moving to Portsmouth in September time.

Im a lil busy today, but I will give you some feedback tomorrow... Erm i had a massive rant about Future, and have been having problems since i first took out subscriptions in sept last year...

Ended with me threatening to take them to court. Nonetheless the mags side of things is probs great but there CS is rubbbbbbbbbiiiiiiiiiiiiissssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhh hh
