I've got about 4 hours worth of play on PES and am struggling to get away from using the nunchuk stick to dribble with. It seems to me that it would be more fluid to dribble using the drag/dribble method and I suspect that more advanced players use this - is this the case ?.
Secondly - I find that defending is a bit of a random art. Is it better to let the defenders do thier job once you have highlighted the attacker and wait for them intercept the ball or try to do it manually ?. When I try to defend manually I seem to leave some rather large holes at the back or always end up committing a foul when I slide tackle! .
I think the drag dribble method is a lot better, and i never use the analogue stick. You can change pace easier and it does flow a lot better for me. Once you get used to it, you'll probably start using this more. Have you done Champs Road yet? It gives some tips on this I think.
Defending is practise too. I defend manually with the odd man marking on a danger man or something. However, here on WiiTalk its really personal preference, I like to slide tackle and intercept, but others man mark and intercept like that...both are effective, just depends on how you want to do it. Using the yellow dribble can help position your players to avoid big holes in your defence...and holding Z down is effectively X on the PS versions...with a few differences
i only drag dribble when i'm trying to run past defenders pretty much, and i try to gett lots of defenders to go to a guy to get the ball but they always manage to fail, so i normally have to stick to trying to intercept

Sorry for the delay in replying. Just moved house and my Broadband hasn't been connected yet - just gone back to work so am playing catch-up.
Have played a bit of Champs Road since I posted and won a couple of the starter leagues but think level 3 maybe too easy cos I keep winning 6/7/8-0 , maybe it will get harder as i go up the levels ?.
I have found myself using the drag dribble more with more experience - still can't get the hang of intercepting the ball though - must just be a biff at defending !.
Another Q - is acquiring players as random as it seems to be ? - Through sheer luck I have managed to get Larsson and Alexandersson but is there any way to get an educated guess ?
You can make an educated guess, as you said, but a lot of it comes down to luck. I'm sure there's a couple of people on here that have cracked the system to a certain extent though.....
What I do, is look at the opposing players stats before the game, identify who I might like, and then find their strongest stat. So if say puyol had 90 defence, I would probably look for a card saying something like 'defending is his forte'

Didnt always work like
^^ Sound advice and the closest you'll get to working out which players are which
As for Difficulty settings, if you're winning games by that much, then you are playing too easy, keep raising the dificulty whenever you feel it's getting too easy and you'll be playing on Hardest before you know it. Once you've mastered the hardest setting, then you're ready for online
Keep up the practice and eventually you'll find a playing style that suits you. There's a lot of different options on this game and most of the members here are different from one another in their style. That's one of the things that makes the game so great

Well - I chose the middle difficulty setting because I thought that would be a good place to start (not too easy/not too difficult) but I suppose I must just be naturally good at the game
