Analysis
The situation before the last two games (correct me if I'm wrong, it is rather late here)
:
- If Sweden wins or draws they will win the group.
- If Sweden lose their game while Spain loses or draws, Russia will win the group.
- If Sweden loses and Spain wins then Russia, Spain and Sweden will all be at 6 points. This means that goal difference from the games played against each other (not including the Greece games) will decide. Sweden has +2 minus whatever they lose by. Russia has -2 plus whatever they win by. Spain will have 0 no matter how big their win against Greece is.
- If Russia beats Sweden by two goals and Spain wins then Sweden, Russia and Spain all have 6 points and an internal goal difference of 0. In this case most scored goals against each other will decide. Spain will be on 4, Sweden will be on 4 + any goals scored in the last game and Russia will have 0 plus any goals scored against Sweden.
- If Russia - Sweden ends 2-0 or 3-1, while Spain wins then Sweden will win the group followed by Spain.
- If Russia - Sweden ends 4-2, while Spain wins then Sweden will win the group and Russia and Spain will both be on 6 points and have the exact same internal goal difference of 4-4. In this case goal difference of the whole group is taken into account and Spain has to do better against Greece than the 4-1 that Russia produced.
- If Russia - Sweden ends 4-2, while Spain - Greece ends 4-1 then I don't have a clue what happens... rematch? coin flip?
Conclusions:
-
Sweden: can afford to lose the game by two goals, no matter what happens and still go through. If they lose by 3 goals and Spain wins they will be knocked out.
-
Spain: needs to get at least as many points in the last game as Russia. If they both draw or lose Spain will follow Sweden to the play offs. If Spain makes a better result than 4-1 then only the result of Russia beating Sweden by two goals in a game with eight goals or more (5-3, 6-4, 7-3 etc.) could send Spain home. If Spain wins by less than 4-1, then 4-2 in the other game would knock them out too.
In short: Beat Greece and Spain is almost sure to be in the play offs.
-
Russia: Needs to get more points in the last game than Spain. If Spain wins they can still go through by winning by three goals, by winning by two goals while scoring more than 4 goals or by winning by 4-2 while Greece doesn't lose too big against Spain.
In short: Win by three goals and Russia is through, or win by 2 in a game with a lot of goals.
-
Greece: is out no matter what.
