Thumbs down for you sysadmins... printer problem..

Hi,

I have just bought two HP Laserjets 4350dtn.

I have installed the XP drivers on the our printer server.

Myself (administrator) then mapped to the printer from my local machine and this mapped fine, and I could print fine. The drivers would have been downloaded to my local machine.

Another user (non administrator) then mapped the printer which worked fine. When the user tried a test print, there is an error "test print can not complete" - I assume that although the printer mapped fine, I dont think the drivers downloaded to the local machine.

I have checked the printer settings, the share settings and the permissions and they are exactly the same as what the other printers are on the same server which everybody is using.

What I think is happening is that for some reason the user is not being allowed to install the driver locally on thier machine even though they can install other printer drivers.

Any idea?

Let me know if you need some more information.

In that case, why not install the printer drivers locally on the machine you are trying to install the printer on? They will then be stored locally so when your user logs on to install the printer is should pull them from the local machine instead of the server.

Make sure the drivers you are using are the latest ones from HP as this can sometimes help with strange problems like this.

Does anything appear in the event viewer on the machine you are having this problem with, it may give you more details to google than just "test print can not complete".

I have spent 5 days on this...!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently it is something to do with *.bud files and permissions.

Joy!

What on earth is a .bud file? Never heard of them.

Permissions are great aren't they? lol - I've had plenty of fun with them in the past locking down computers for pesky students to use!

i'm assuming that you fixed this already . . but you need to install the printer globally as the admin. It'll work for whoever logs on then.
