My advice to you, is the same advice I give to anyone.

Shop around for the highest spec machine you can get for the money you are willing to spend.

Dell PCs seem to have plenty of special offers on all the time so perhaps a quick phone call to them will help. Just make a note of everything they say but don't buy it there and then, still shop around for the best deal.

If you prefer to buy from a shop then visit PC World, Comet & Staples to see what they have to offer. Remember, PC World has on-line only offers that save a lot of money off of the instore price.

If you want to spend £500 on a PC then shop around and see what you can get for your money. If you want to spend £700 then do the same. I guess what I am trying to say here is that your first of all need to work out how much you really want to spend.

9 months ago I brought a laptop, I had £800 to spend in total. I brought a HP thing from Staples and an additional 1GB of RAM from PC World. I got the best deal I could at the price I wanted to spend at the time.

Good luck!

P.S.

If you find a couple of PCs on line then pop the URLs in here and we can give you our oppinion on what we think of them!

You are 100% correct! Alienware are 'famous' for selling fantastic gaming PCs.

They have one on promotion at the moment here:

Alienware : ALX - The Best Custom Built Desktop PC with Liquid Cooling!

And it's a bargain at just £3,000!!!!

Not sure if they have PCs for £700 or less though, they tend to be fantastic PCs at fantastically high prices (due to having the very latest and fastest components in them).

I'm also getting a new PC, but was advised to wait around six months when directx10 graphics cards will be available. Is this true? I've got £1000 to spend and I want to get it right first time round, and not have to worry about buying a machine with outdated components.

If you wait 6 months until directx10 comes out, you will then be advised to wait another 6 months for something else to come out by which time you will then be advised to wait another 6 months for another piece of updated hardware to come out, you will then need to wait another 6 months for something else and so on...

I spent around £800 on a HP laptop (including a RAM upgrade to 2GB) and 3 months later they had all got dual-core CPUs in them!

I guess what I am trying to say is that if you start waiting for the next tecnology to be included in your computer you will always be waiting as PC technology is constantly changing.

If you want a computer now, then my advice to you is to buy one now!

Take a trip to the likes of PC World, Staples and Comet etc. with a notepad and pen (leave your wallet at home for now) and see what you can get for your money. Right down the different specs and the make/model so you can compare them when you get home.

Then take a look on the internet (PC World for example have special offers that only appear online) and have a look around places like Dell and compare them to the ones you have seen i the shops.

It doesn't matter when you buy a PC, as soon as you take it out of the box it is out of date... This is because technology changes so rapidly in this industry!

As you want to use the machine for gaming, play particular notice to the Graphics card and how much system RAM the PC has.

Look up the different graphics cards you have seen and see if they are for gaming or not. If in doubt as the technical guys (not a salesperson) at PC World, they will soon tell you if it is suitable for gaming or not.

Personally, if I was to buy a desktop PC I would buy a Dell machine. In my experience (we have just brought 300 of them in the last 6 months), they are a very fast, robustly built, quiet and reliable PC!

Let us know how you get on and perhaps even post a couple of links to a few PCs you have been looking at and people here can give you their oppinion.

I couldn't agree with that more.

Personally I build all my PC's myself which isn't for everyone and not always the cheapest way, but it does allow me to upgrade as and when is needed.

Thing is my GFX card is a year old and the mobo / CPU more than that and it'll play most of the recently released games at decent settings without any slow down (F.E.A.R ran as smooth as a babies bum). As it's not used for gaming all the time I'll wait until after the 8800 GTX cards drop in price then go get one of them, I can't see the point of paying the price of a PS3 with a game or a Wii with loads of games just for a GFX card that'll be out of date in six months then in another 6 need a new CPU to stop the system getting bottlenecked.

PC games are the nuts like F.E.A.R and I know I'll be buying the new Command and Conquer PC game as these are what the PC is great for, but for general gaming, value for money, and longevity you can't beat the console whether it be a Wii, PS3 or 360
In my opinion anyway lol

Building your own PC used to be the cheaper way of doing things but it isn't any more.

However, the advantage of building your own is that you can pick and choose every single component yourself so you can make sure the PC is exactly what you want! And in a nerdy sort of way it is good fun (well certainly a good experience) to build it yourself.

The PSP 2 has been a rumour for well over a year now and nothing as of yet has materialised.

I'm sure it is something that they are researching but I suppose it will all be down to waiting to see if the PS3 is as successfull as they hope. If it is then I would expect to see a PSP 2 follow it.

Check here for one of the first articles on the matter:

T3 - PSP 2 on the horizon?
