If you wait 6 months until directx10 comes out, you will then be advised to wait another 6 months for something else to come out by which time you will then be advised to wait another 6 months for another piece of updated hardware to come out, you will then need to wait another 6 months for something else and so on...
I spent around £800 on a HP laptop (including a RAM upgrade to 2GB) and 3 months later they had all got dual-core CPUs in them!
I guess what I am trying to say is that if you start waiting for the next tecnology to be included in your computer you will always be waiting as PC technology is constantly changing.
If you want a computer now, then my advice to you is to buy one now!
Take a trip to the likes of PC World, Staples and Comet etc. with a notepad and pen (leave your wallet at home for now) and see what you can get for your money. Right down the different specs and the make/model so you can compare them when you get home.
Then take a look on the internet (PC World for example have special offers that only appear online) and have a look around places like Dell and compare them to the ones you have seen i the shops.
It doesn't matter when you buy a PC, as soon as you take it out of the box it is out of date... This is because technology changes so rapidly in this industry!
As you want to use the machine for gaming, play particular notice to the Graphics card and how much system RAM the PC has.
Look up the different graphics cards you have seen and see if they are for gaming or not. If in doubt as the technical guys (not a salesperson) at PC World, they will soon tell you if it is suitable for gaming or not.
Personally, if I was to buy a desktop PC I would buy a Dell machine. In my experience (we have just brought 300 of them in the last 6 months), they are a very fast, robustly built, quiet and reliable PC!
Let us know how you get on and perhaps even post a couple of links to a few PCs you have been looking at and people here can give you their oppinion.
