Default Bandwidth Speedtest

Some of you may be familiar with sites that test your bandwidth. The problem is that most of the servers that administer the test are in the US.

This increases the distance the signal has to travel (and maybe also the number of servers your signal is routed through) and therefore increases the latency time (ie there's more lag).
The result?....inaccurate results.

However, there is a really cool site that has a UK (London) server to administer the test = speedtest.net
This means that the three main areas tested (download speed, upload speed and latency) are much more accurate.
You'll also be informed of your distance to the server.

Here are my results for my telewest 2Mbps broadband:

The latency is very important so that, when it comes time to online gaming via the Wii (when those games arrive), you'll know how much lag you'll experience.

These are what the speeds mean.

Also, if your ISP has a 'Fair Usage Policy', you may be experiencing slow speeds if they've put you on their FUP list. The ISP usually won't tell you so this speed test is a good way of checking you're getting what you're paying for

I would imagine the distance is your ISPs distance from London as it wouldn't know where your paricular house/computer is.

I'm on a direct connection to the internet backbone!

I don't actually have an ISP, infact I suppose I am an ISP to the 14 sites that we share our connection with!

As you may have already guessed I am at work at the moment which is where I did the test! I work for an educational establishment where (indirectly) the government provides out 10meg connection. If we happened to be in Scotland we would have 100meg connection - now that's fast!!!

yeah well is said "a bit" not by much. But you know what students are like...if were not downloading music were downloading films from torrents etc. so alot of bandwidth gets used! i mean my flatmates alone pretty much download constantly from torrents! If they let us use xbox live there would be even less available!
