Default CPU help needed.

I recently bought a 2nd hand 1.5 ghz pc and decided to upgrade the CPU. I checked on the Packard bell website to find the tech specs of my pc and found that the motherboard supports CPU's up to the speed of 2.4ghz. So I bought a 2.4ghz CPU today, installed it and my PC is telling me that the speed is 1.8ghz!

WHY???

Any help will be much appreciated please

I'm assuming its an AMD:
The AMD 2400+ probably runs at 1800Mhz, you will need to flash your bios for it to display as a 2400+ (it won't make it run any quicker though)

It its an Intel chip then its probably the jumper settings are wrong on the motherboard or your bios settings.
Probably running at the wrong bus speed.

Think of something from your childhood, a vivid memory. Between that time and now, every cell in your body has changed. So, were you really there?

Pentium 4.

Been doing some research and found out that the fbs on the new CPU is 533mhz and my motherboard only supports 400mhz. Oh well, looks like i'm going to need a new motherboard. Well I say new, I mean 2nd hand. How much is it likely to cost?

You may want to be carefull here. Once you change the motherboard it's a slippery slope.

When you're changing the MB make sure that it will still accept the type / speed of memory that you have installed. Otherwise you could find yourself having to change that next.

From what I understand, Packard Bell make their own motherboards etc. so a new one might not fit in their case as the mounting holes may be in a different place.

Be sure to check that the RAM you currently have will be supported in your new motherboard and that you have the correct amound of IDE or SATA connectors for your CD/DVD drive and hard disk(s).

Might be easier to get a cheap case to install your new motherboard in and remove the items like the hard disk, ram CD/DVD drive and install it in that than messing about trying to get things to fit in your existing case...

Thanks for the response guys Decided against replacing motherboard, as this will mean having to upgrade memory as well. Damn. why are these things never simple? Going to go back to computer exchange and see if they've got a 400fsb version of the processor that I bought. Wish me luck!!

Good luck with your motherboard hunting then! Make sure you get one that will fit your Packard Bell case...

Success!

Luckily, computer exchange had the same speed processor with a 400 fsb, so no need to replace motherboard and memory.
