Default vista

hey i was thinkin of getting this sometime in the near future coz my computer is pritty much f*cked, and with the release of the new operating system i was planning to copy all the stuff on my computer off onto a external hardrive, re-format my computers harddrive and install vista

so with that i was wondering what people whos got it thought of it? (if someone has got it yet?)

and if anyone has actually had a go on it and thought much off it?

cheers veinx

I installed it last Saturday. I re-installed XP on Monday.
It is very pretty and the sidebar is a remarkably nice touch, but the lack of decent drivers cripples it. Not only does the new Aero desktop put extra strain on everything but nVidia (that's my card) still have really poor drivers available for Vista, meaning the desktop experience was just too slow. On top of that lots of games don't work. I couldn't find any video encoding software that would work (everything crashed), Bluetooth drivers don't work (no GlovePIE) and the nVidia drivers had no full screen video support, so I couldn't stream videos to my HDTV.

Having gone back to XP the only major differences are the pretty desktop on Vista (I'm using Google desktop for the sidebar and it's actually slightly better than Vista's) and I don't have Media Centre, which I must admit looked pretty cool.

My advice would be to wait. Probably until DirectX 10 graphics cards become affordable; that will be when the drivers will have matured hopefully

I've been using the various different flavours of Vista right from the BETA testing stages early 2006.

I can think of no real reason for installing it on any computers where I work (we have just under 2000 of them) other than it looks nice! As far as we can see there would be no benefit to us in upgrading from XP SP2.

There is still a lot more work to be done with driver support! :(

If you are buying a brand new PC then ensure that it comes with the home premium edition, else stick with Windows XP with Service Pack 2 on it as it does just a good job as Vista.

I like vista. It is cool, but mainly all it seems like is XP with some eye candy.

But its supposed to have beefed security also.

The security is supposed to be good, though 1 of the first things it does is show you a list of 3rd party firewalls that Microsoft recommend (like Norton, Kaspersky etc). I got the impression that though the built in security is better than XP's it was still about as much use as a waterballoon in a zombie attack...

Aye, I tinkered with it down at a mates. It's all very pretty, but I didn't get the feeling that there was any real point to bringing it out.

Of course theres a point, $$$$

Think of something from your childhood, a vivid memory. Between that time and now, every cell in your body has changed. So, were you really there?

Im going to let Vista be tested by the real end users before I use it. I have tested it already at work and to be honest I loved it...! but I need to get a more powerful machine first.. more ram..! also want to get a second monitor.

I've asked this question before but no reply - so ill try again!

How will vista affect the price of new PCs when it comes preinstalled? Will you be able to get a higher spec PC running xp for the same price?
