This has come as a bit of a revelation to me. Since buying the Wii, the Gamecube has become relegated to our bedroom, and sits beneath a 19" 16:9 LCD telly.
I currently have it connected via RGB SCART.
Anyway, turns out my Cube is an old model and it's got a digital output for a component lead. These seem to be virtually impossible to get. There is one for sale on eBay for about £36.90 inc postage. Don't really fancy paying that!
Has anyone on this forum got their Cube connected via component? Is it any better than RGB SCART? Do you still need to connect the analogue cable for the stereo audio leads, or is that incorporated into this lead? (No sign of it in the picture)
This really proves that Nintendo were ahead of their time. Apparently, they quickly droppped the digital output from the back of the Cube to save costs, because there was no demand for it, and only ever made the component leads in Japan. Had they launched the Cube NOW, this would have been an essential bit of kit for most users!
Can't believe I never noticed it before!
Games owned (that I play): EA Playground, Endless Ocean, Excite Truck, Ghost Squad, Gottlieb Pinball, HotD, Kororinpa, Link’s Crossbow Training, Mario Kart, Mario Party 8, MySims, Pinbusters, RE:UC, Super Paper Mario, SSB Brawl, Wii Fit, Wii Play, Wii Sports

Only thing is PAL Gamecube cant output 480p, only NTSC games (i think not sure about JAP)
I was amazed when someone told me Melee was 480p compatible, but I was very disappointed that the PAL region arent able to enjoy this feature.
Yes, it's that lack of progressive scan which makes me wonder if it would be any better than RGB SCART. It would be nice to get some feedback from someone that had it rigged up on component, just to know.
Can't see myself spending over thirty quid for it though. I did bid on one on eBay at the weekend, but someone took it from me in the final moments (like that's never happened before!) so I lost it. Would have been about £23, which I could live with.
Ah well. I'd appreciate a reply if anyone has ever seen it set up with component.

To be honest I think it was more the case that Europe were/are behind the times on this one. At the time of the Cube's release both Japan and the USA were using HD Tellys and were also broadcasting programmes in HD. (At that time, here in the UK, wide screen had only just become the standard!) We're always going to be behind on this score, as the last I heard is that Japan are experimenting in ULTRA High Definition...
My cube also had the Digital output, but I wasn't aware that it was only the early one's that had it...You learn something new everyday!
Thanks for the replies. Don't think I'll bother investing that amount of money in a lead then.
It's amazing what you learn. I thought I knew all there was to know about the Cube!

Now don't quote me on this, but isn't the video out on all Nintendo consoles the same plug? If it is, I see no reason why a Wii component cable wouldn't work.
In the manual for the Wii, Nintendo themselves say you can use the Wii cables with older consoles, but you shouldn't use old cables for the Wii.
So it may be a possibility, do you have any friends with a Wii component cable Sue? Perhaps you could borrow one from somewhere just to try it out? And with the freeloader disc, you could invest in some NTSC games to play at 480p.

I'm aware you said don't quote, but which page of the manual did you find this? The supplied AV cable with the Wii has a different shaped plug and is therefore incompatable with all previous Ninty consoles.
That said, I can confirm that all three previous Nintendo consoles (SNES, N64, Cube) worked using the same AV lead that came supplied with the SNES.
Yes, I was aware that the connections were the same on the SNES, N64 and Gamecube, but the Wii connection is a different shape. They are not compatible.
Nice thought though.
