Is anyone else sad at the news that there will be no more revamped Game Boys brought out?
I had anticipated a new version (the GBAII?) to be released maybe in 2008, and thought it would have graphics to rival the PSP and maybe have a disc slot to play Game Cube games on the move.
But no, sadly Nintendo have announced the demise of the Game Boy in view of the overwhelming success of the DS.
My boys and I started with original Game Boy Advances - I went on to get a pink Game Boy Micro. They asked me to get them Game Boy Colours to play their Pokemon games on, so I got them both one each - one had the Pikachu version. Then eventually my eldest got a blue Game Boy Micro when I saw them for sale recently for the daft price of £17.99 + delivery each online.
Although you can play the games on a DS, I think there was still room for the Game Boy in the console war. I still play the Wario Ware game, Bust a Move, Mario Kart Advance, Mario Pinball, Pokemon Pinball and quite a few others on my Micro when I'm resting from the DS and the Wii!
Any comments?
Games owned (that I play): EA Playground, Endless Ocean, Excite Truck, Ghost Squad, Gottlieb Pinball, HotD, Kororinpa, Link’s Crossbow Training, Mario Kart, Mario Party 8, MySims, Pinbusters, RE:UC, Super Paper Mario, SSB Brawl, Wii Fit, Wii Play, Wii Sports
Not too bothered, i only have the big original grey gameboy which is still amazing to this day and a black ds lite. the ex bought a pink micro recently but just because it matched her pink ipod LOL. Im not too bothered about this to tell you the truth, the future in the hands of the DS now.

It wouldn't work for Nintendo to have two handhelds in the console war. If they released a new Gameboy, the DS would die. Then they would release a new DS and the Gameboy would die.
But when they first released the DS, they were talking about the next Game Boy and saying there was room for both in the industry.
I followed it carefully and they still hinted at the next version, until this sudden announcement.

I thought the DS is a game boy, they just changed the name.
Do you have a link to an article, I did a quick search but could not find anything, would be interesting to read.
I don't think there would be much of a market for it. I was disappointed that the DS couldn't play Colour and Original games but it would have bumped the price up too much.
It was an article in this month's NGamer mag (Issue 14 Oct 2007), but I can't find it on their website.
I guess the DS has replaced the Game Boyu but it seems a shame as they were so different.
The DS compliments the Wii so well though - both requiring a similar method of gameplay to work (moving stylus = motion activated Wiimote) that I guess that's where they want to keep their identity now.

I always saw the DS as the next stage in the Gameboy timeline, with a different name. Tbh, there isn't much difference. They both play games, it's just the DS has created a new way of playing the games.

Plus it can still work with games created with the Game Boy's controls as it still has the buttons, two more in fact. There is nothing stopping developers making games that don't use the stylus.
