I know all about Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy is currently blowing my mind on a daily basis but I never played Sunshine, or saw it in action or was aware of anyone who had.
Looking at the contemporary reviews on the metacritic website it sounds amazing but I gather that with the benifit of hindsite it's considered a slightly dissapointing installment in the Super Mario series and all the reviews for Galaxy talk about it as being an heir or sequel to SM64, almost as if SMS was a slightly embaressing mistep to be brushed over or forgotten.
So, I have two questions:
1. What are the flaws/problems with Sunshine and is it still worth picking up sometime?
2. What makes Galaxy truer to the spirit of SM64 than Sunshine?
sunshine is bright colour full and fun but the bad point is even though its a mario game it doesnt feel like mario because you have a wepond but if you love galaxy i sugest you try this out
for me mario sunshine is definitley the weakest in the series! can't quite put my finger on it but i never bothered trying to get pass the second level (un heard of for me as ive completed all of the mario series apart from galaxy so far)
mario64 took me alot of getting into to start with but once i got the ds version i loved it
i still think the 2d versions are the best with my favourites listed in this order!
supermario land (snes)
supermario bro3 (allstar version snes)
supermario bro (nes)
mario galaxy (wii)
supermario bro2 (nes)
supermario sunshine (cube)
counting other mario games
paper mario the thousand year door (cube) has got to be my favourite game of all time
SUnshine for me was a cute little game, but I really didnt like the use of F.L.U.D.D. It just didn't suit the mario genre, not like the 'suits' do in Galaxy.
it's strange as i didn't like the f.l.u.d.d but loved the polter gust on luigis mansion a much better game in my opinion! fingers crossed for a wii version
Actually, based on reviews, Sunshine isn't the only cube title that gets a raw deal from reviewers.
Reviews of Twilight Princess call it an homage or love letter to Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker gets no mention. Also, I read a review that called Mario Kart Wii possibly the best Mario Kart since MK64.
I can't comment on the Zelda titles but Double Dash is easily a better game than MK64. More, better tracks, improved graphics and weapons, 4 player action, more fun all round really!
I think Gamecube games suffer in retrospect because they couldn't hope to be as amazing and revolutionary as those classic 64 titles were at the time but it doesn't mean that, at least in the case of Double Dash, improvements weren't made.
Chris, just look at all 2nd rate consoles*
All of them get bad reviews, I guess it's because reviewers don't like the console as much as other consoles. Take the PSP or Dreamcast for instance, both good consoles, but weren't the 'best' (publically) in their day, this meant their top games got less exposure compared to the 'better' (publically) games on the more popular consoles.
*2nd rate, meaning they didn't have the largest market share in their lifetime
"PAPERMARIO THE THOUSAND YEAR DOOR is one of the best games ive ever played "
'I get money, money I got'.
'I'm a hustla homie, I'm a hustla, hustla homie!'
I thought that Sunshine was an excellent addition to the mario series. I too find it unjust that they just seem to ignore the gamecube games in the genre's, but I think the reason is that the gamecube games tried taking different turns on the series we all loved, and some of these people hate change.
Wind Waker introduced a Ocean theme and Cel-shaded graphics.
Sunshine introduced the use of a weapon and various upgrades.
I thought these games were great, but I think maybe the revolution of the PS2 overshadowed these games. It seems to me like the PS2 raised the rating scale, so these games obviously couldn't live up to PS2 games, so I think that may have influenced the ratings.

Also, I read a review that called Mario Kart Wii possibly the best Mario Kart since MK64.
I'm guessing the reviewer who wrote that hasn't ever played MKDS? Of all of the Mario Kart series it is in my opinion the tightest control wise, best looking and most playable (there are purists who would say that the original is best, but I'll let them make their own case).
i seen shunshine been played at my mates a few years back and it looks pretty fun so when i was out i saw it for £5.99 in some shop in good condition so i picked it up as a bargain, so if you see it cheap and wanna know what its like just buy it and see for yourself.
I don't get it, i put my Wii on a jelly fish sting but it didnt help it at all!
