You really should just get it and play it. In my opinion it is absolutely fantastic and just as good as any other mario game. The controls are amazing and the graphics are great too.
The only flaw I would say is that the island theme can get slightly repetitive, as all the levels are based around this theme, aside from the crazy block levels, which I believe were the inspiration for galaxy (read it in an interview somewhere.)
Nevertheless it is a brilliant game that is well worth owning, I really really regret selling my copy.
I think it is awesome. I remember buying it when it came out and played it for about 4 months and got all 120 shines. It has great levels, great characters (except FLUDD) and is highly addictive just like all other Mario games. It becomes quite a difficult game after you get around 90 shines and start collecting the remaining ones.
Games I own for the Wii:
Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports
Other Consoles I own:
SNES, Game Boy, N64, Game Boy Advance, Gamecube, Nintendo DS

The simple response is that nothing is wrong with sunshine
It is a fun game with some really nice levels and ideas (be it just a touch on the bright side!) BUT as others have said; people expected a hit like Mario 64 / Mario galaxy and sunshine was just a bit of a let down. Even at the time reactions were mixed and confused... I liked sunshine but I didn't love it.
I dont see wot all the complaint is about Mario Sunshine, i've found nothing wrong with it, sure its not as groundbreakingly awesome as Mario Galaxy, but its still a great game in itself.

Sunshine is quite old; was early in the Gamecube's life - it is decent for the £6-8 it costs now; I'd recommend it if you feel inclined to play more mario action.
I know all about Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy is currently blowing my mind on a daily basis but I never played Sunshine, or saw it in action or was aware of anyone who had.
Looking at the contemporary reviews on the metacritic website it sounds amazing but I gather that with the benifit of hindsite it's considered a slightly dissapointing installment in the Super Mario series and all the reviews for Galaxy talk about it as being an heir or sequel to SM64, almost as if SMS was a slightly embaressing mistep to be brushed over or forgotten.
So, I have two questions:
1. What are the flaws/problems with Sunshine and is it still worth picking up sometime?
2. What makes Galaxy truer to the spirit of SM64 than Sunshine?
Don't worry about it. Mario Sunshine is a brilliant game, it can be far more excessively frustrating than Mario 64 but otherwise its a great memorable game. Definatly one of the best games on the Gamecube. Its less of a departure from the Mario 64 formula than Galaxy and its not half as mind blowing (it isn't set in space afterall). It will however last you twice as long and has some great level design and what galaxy doesn't have, a challenge.
The reviews you've got may make it seem like were the exception to the rule, the people who liked sunshine. Back in its day though everyone loved Sunshine and time hasn't deminished the fun factor. Pick it up for sure.
