Wii thoughts episode 3 - I can't get no satisfaction
It's summer, or getting there and Nintendo has a very competent part of the gaming market thus far. Yet why arn't they keeping us existing customers satisfied? Why are we being dripped content for our beloved white boxes?
Sure the Wii isn't about power, thats been stated so much but Nintendo seems determined to have a last gen product on the market. Nintendo has never said the Wii isn't about features, they state its about community but in todays gaming landscape theres more than one community the box social and the online.
A next gen console, in this day and age should at least cater for the multi media areas the 360 and PS3 are successfully capturing. By this I mean it should play music, it should allow this in game and on the channel interfaces. (instead of the looping calm relaxing elevator music)
I know exciteatrick does this but im talking burning your music collection to the Wii via CD and playing it ANYTIME you wish. Im talking about making Ipods and the like compatible with the Wii. Storing music on the Wiimote? the possibilities are endless.
The Wii shop if im allowed to say such a thing is crap, you have one channel a year and these are always half arsed. An opera browzer is a nice touch but what have you done for us lately? theres nothing worth plugging my Wii in for on the VC at the moment. Wheres the ability to download demos while im asleep like Nintendo promised us? in face wheres the demos? wheres the DS link up for adding DS content? infact wheres the DS link up? That's two things Nintendo promised but didn't deliver 6 months into the Wii being on market.
And what is with the Wii's online infastructure, its not finished, nor has it been announced and the consoles been out 6 months. We want friend lists over every game, we want private chat, we want team chat, ability to play music on the Wii on any game ectra. We don't want silly slow friend codes just stick a parental lock on for that and give us what we want?
And then you have the games, nothing original and none-sequal sticks to mind for the console of new experiences. We did if you recall have Metriod planned for launch alongside Zelda and a promise Mario Galaxy would be out in the new year. Where the hell are those two? hanging back for a profitable season like Christmas no doubt? and lets be serious Nintendo could hold back Brawl till Xmas 2008 to capitalise massively at Christmas twice in a row?
The Wii has so much potensial but Nintendo just seem so content on doing nothing while the system flys of store shelves, too conserned with shifting units that keeping existing customers happy.

Great blog entry Gaffer!
I couldn't agree more with what you are saying about the Wii having so much potential but not much seems to be coming of it at the moment.
The consoles have been selling like hot cakes with people being impressed with Wii Sports and the unique controll methods, but this novelty will soon wear off if Nintendo is not carefull and the last thing we need is the Wii to beceome a novelty item that no one wants any more...

The novalty has wore off for a lot of us, maybe because as it stands unlike the DS the Wii is just a gimik rather than (like the DS) revolutionary.
When the Wii forfills this standard to be considered a competent console rather than a one trick pony it could very well be too late.

Thanx for the Big-up Wiiman.......unfortunately it's Killarapp's blog entry though
Killarrapp - I agree. It seems Nintendo are drip-feeding us and titles are taking a lot longer than expected.
I'm personally fed up with the never ending wait for:
Mercury Meltdown (proves it isn't just Ninty playing silly buggers here)
Super Paper Mario (already released in US)
etc etc
On a positive, they've made Mario Strikers online (at LAST ) but they've buggered up the online friend codes system with other games due for release.
Apprently, non-nintendo games may require a different code per game (a la DS), which really ruins the idea of Wii Friend Codes imho.
Having said that, many of the Wii Gamers out there are non-gamers (if you get what I mean) and after 6 months, are STILL content with just WiiSports (I know of a few people who are in this catagory).
Maybe Nintendo feels there's "no rush" ?

I feel I need to add a different perspective to this increasing Wii ***** fest.
Without doubt every single console has a slow first year when it comes to releasing games and content bar none. When I bought the PS2 at launch they had SSX and Timesplitters as launch games and after that? Nothing......for ages! I got so desperate for a new game I ended up buying Smuggler's Run and that was an awful game.
What I am saying is it's still early days, yes it's been 6 months but in console terms that's not a lot and these past couple of months are notoriously slow in the games industry...FACT
Okay, so Metroid has been put back and so has Mario Galaxy but what do you want? For it to be rushed and half arsed? No, of course not because some of the Wii's launch games were exactly like that and what happened? People b**ched about it! Sometimes I feel Nintendo can't win.
So the friend code system for online play isn't perfect and I would prefer to not have this system but to be honest, I think when Metroid comes out and I'm running around online blasting people to kingdom come I don't think I'll care that I had to type in some codes.
Surely nobody really cares that the Wii can't play CD's do they??? The Wiimote's can only hold info on about 12 Mii's, how the hell can they fit music onto it?? Also, I'm sure the "chat" stuff you're referring to will happen eventually as will the DS connectivity but WHY CAN'T YOU PEOPLE JUST WAIT?
Oh and by the way, Wii IS a gimmick? DS is "revolutionary"? Since when has touch screen been revolutionary?? I do like the DS but the majority of DS games use touch screen mainly to select a menu WOOOOW!!
The Wii is finally starting to pick up some pace, Super Mario Strikers Charged has just been released as the Wii's first onliner and it's had consistantly good reviews, the online system also appears to work well. Metroid has been given a release date of 20th August and it looks pretty special, Super Mario Galaxy is nearing completion, Nintendo have hinted at the demo channel and I'm certain that now the online games have started Nintendo have a few things up their sleeves.
I've been an avid gamer for 21 years and this console above all others offers the public more through it's menu's than any other. The news channel is well presented and well written, the weather channel (again) well presented and very accurate, the Everybody Votes channel is a bit of light harmless fun (lighten up people, c'mooon) and even the photo channel is fun when you use it. I just get the feeling that unless they release a new really important channel every week people will get p**sed off about it.
Just remember.....patience is a virtue

Agree
I compelety Agree with Huzzellio, I remember when the N64 came along at lauch date, it had 3 games avaiable, Mario 64, Blast Crops and Poilt wings and that was it for months and months on end, I remember people saying the exact same things as Gaffer and co are saying...we waited with the N64 and what happen....some of the greatest games in history, need I name a few????...I think I will
Zelda Oricina of Time.....The Best game ever!
Mario 64....Set the standard of every 3D plaformer today
WWF NO Mercy...Again set the standard to the WWF games today
I could go on, so just like Huzzellio said be patience, its Nintendo after all, they have learned from there mistakes with the gamecube and matured from that. Does the DS has voice chat??....Yes, Does the DS have Downloadable games.....Yes! Does the DS have online games...Well Yes they do infact they own the online handheld market.
If the Ds has all of this it is only a matter of time that the Wii get all of this. I have been games for over 15 years and can easily say that the wii is the best console I have ever played..Think about it you can play all the games that you played years ago...I think that is genius and Nintendo deserve a huge pat on the back for it.
Also some of the game we have got so far have been amazing:
Zelda ;Twilight Princess
Mario Strikers which I got today..gaming gold
SSX Blur
Wii Sports
Red Steel
God Father Blackhand Edition
So just to summarize again, Online will get better, Voice chat will come and I think you will all agree with that

It's not all bad. Everyone knows that the 3rd parties have an excuse......they didn't forsee the success and so are only starting to make the games now......
....but nintendo itself has no excuse.
Realising that it initially had poor 3rd party support should've prompted it to perfect and deliver more content early on.
This is my only main criticism of Nintendo.
Also to clarify, I don't 100% agree with you killarapp, in that I don't feel at all "let down" by the lack of it being a "media center" in that I honestly don't give a cr4p.
I bought my Wii to play games, not serve as a Photo-viewer or an internet browser or an iTunes clone (Yes, playing my own music in any game (a la Excite Truck) IS a high priority I think - but otherwise I use my Hi-Fi for music...not my games console).
I'm also pretty bored with the voting channel and haven't touched it for ages.
No, what I would've liked Ninty to include fully, earlier, is a better VC channel with c64 games, online service ready and waiting so that existing launch games would've been online, and the promised "Games Channel" to download original new games up and running.
...the other channels are of much less interest to me.

Granted this is true but theres no logical reason for it happening to every console.

Yup thats a fact for sure but its a changing the 360 has had some hitters in this season and the PS3 was launched

A happy medium, finish the game then release it, im pretty sure for Nintendo to talk about Mario galaxy as 'should hit launch game' and now were talking TBC Q4 2007, I think Nintendo are taking the profitable ****. Its not that the content isn't ready Nintendo are just making us wait for a big spending season. We were promised these games would be here by now and they arn't. We won't see them till Autumn. If im wrong and they arn't finished Nintendo have still broke many a promise in convincing me to buy and keep a wii.
So the friend code system for online play isn't perfect and I would prefer to not have this system but to be honest, I think when Metroid comes out and I'm running around online blasting people to kingdom come I don't think I'll care that I had to type in some codes.
Metroids not confirmed online, would make sense but then again so would not using wii codes for every game.

Xbox live began more organised and better implimented than this, that was 5 years ago as for music on the wiimote that was a bit foolish of me, sorry
Oh and by the way, Wii IS a gimmick? DS is "revolutionary"? Since when has touch screen been revolutionary?? I do like the DS but the majority of DS games use touch screen mainly to select a menu WOOOOW!!
The DS and the Wii have a lot in common but the way many games use the DS is so much more intresting and clever than a few sword swinging animations ectra. (tho the godfather really does excell here)
