I recently bought SSBB for my Wii and in doing so opened my can of worms all over again. I must have spent entire days of playtime on Melee and I reckon thats going to double on Brawl because they've brought back my favorate Nintendo character ever into the fray.
Not that i've unlocked him yet, still need to play 400 games first, but having regular Twilight Princess Link is bad enough for me. Maybe because the legend of Zelda series has to be the most satisfying games series ever (bar Half Life)
Grand Theft Auto may be the most open worldy game series out there but Zelda takes the time to add vibrant art direction and intresting scenarios within these places, they don't just make a living breathing city they make a world. A world of varying cultures and outstanding locations. Sure the critics may go as far to say Nintendo never revolutionise the series, but surely this would be blasphemy?
The Zelda series rarely faults and always delivers outstanding quality, with OTT they set up an epic adventure with an emotional edge that really wasn't rivaled till future Zelda titles. It is after all very hard to care about the characters in a computer game, especially in those that are heavily plot driven like the other so called epic the Halo series.
The secret of course (as Half life will tell you) is a mute hero who the player takes complete control of adopting the status of hero and the relationships they have within the game world. The player experiences everything first hand and travels everywhere, exploring an open and diverse world which is totally and fully absorbant. So many games have tried this and failed, Master Chief of the Halo series provided nothing to the game but was simply a blank and dislikable character caught in a linear and skitsophrenic plot full of holes,
the immersion he could have offered was shattered by a dependance on unmemorable one liners and just being in a game as big and dumb as Halo (yes I did need to slag halo off, are we suprised??)
Then theres the depth of detail in The Zelda universe coupled with traditions such as a variation of the main theme in each game and the presense of a kick ass overworld theme, the simplistic, idealistic, medievil setting, the creepy dungeons and epic gigantic boss battles. The Zelda series will never offer any innovative suprises except the jaw dropping mid way plot twists. The fact the games run on for ages and cover so much ground leave you attached even when the credits roll. I know I at the end of Wind Waker felt the need to clap and at the end of TP I lost a nights sleep thinking about it all. The only series that ever kept me awake with its scope is Half Life and thats basically Zelda with guns and aliens.
Link and Gordon Freeman, the coolest video game characters ever.
Feel free to use this thread to agree with me!
