Wii launch breaks UK record

Nintendo has sold more than 105,000 Wiis in the UK since the games console went on sale over here first thing last Friday morning. According to the videogames pioneer, punters took possession of 50,000 Wiis during the first 12 hours it was available.

ChartTrack statistics cited by GamesIndustry.biz show more than double that number of Wiis were sold throughout the weekend. What isn't clear is how many of those - and, indeed, the units sold on Friday - were pre-orders.

That breaks the record set by Microsoft's Xbox 360 when some 70,000 units were sold in the console's first weekend on sale.

Nintendo could have sold a lot more if they decided to stock the shops better.

I couldnt believe it when I read places like Dixons and Game had 46 Wii's and that was it.

It would be interested to know how many of these purchases were genuine and how many are going to end up on ebay.

Yeah, my local ASDA had 8 which they gave out tickets for on the thursday, doh.
Local Toys'r'us had 13, its just stupid.

There seems to be a lot of them but I'm sure its a lower percentage than that of the PS3

A major problem here is retailers haven't caught up with consumers - they think playstation is still the more popular brand but consumers are shouting out 'we want Wii'

Our local game must of had over 100. As we was 91st on the preorder list. On the 8th someone my mate knows who works in game said they had all of the first phase and some second phases aswell.

I guess there will be a large degree of regional variation based on the personal preference of the stockists for each store.
