If you are out during the day why leave it on,there is a risk of it overheating and it could burn the house down,a bit over the top i know, but if its not on its not a risk.
Ah but it's available to recieve customers yes? Much like the Wii will be available to receive messages and updates
I have had my Wii for about 8 months now and have always left it on orange without any probs. Wiiconnect24 was a big thing when they were hyping up the Wii, so they have obviously taken into account the possibility of it overheating and counter-acted this so that it can stay in standby for long times with no problems!

AFAIK it is only the Initial batch of Wiis that had the overheat problem, this was fixed sometime around Feb/Mar and the newer models no longer have this issue. I belive it was a matter discussed in another thread here, and it stemmed around the graphics card still running even though it wasn't needed when the wii was in standby mode. Mine should be ok as I bought it in August. Fingers crossed.
Oh, and I leave mine in Orange mode when it's not in use, I've created about 8 Mii's for family and friends however I have 54 Miis from people sending Miis to me and Miis mingling their way on to my console, and I would'nt get visitors if I closed my 24 hour console now would I?

I just simply do a socket turn off now, it's just not worth my wii having the chance to overheat, it's not like theres a firmware update every day, my main query was if the internet could somehow be affected by this, but I've done it a few times and it hasn't been affected. I think wii's run on a set temprature as even when mine is turned off it's still a little hot. Again thanks for the advice
Just to be clear on this, so far there have only been some unsubstantiated reports of overheating Wiis. From what I've seen amongst the online Wii community, the vast majority of people who leave their Wiis on "orange" all the time seem to have no problems.
Nintendo have yet to make an official statement about the alleged problem.
The only time I've turned my Wii off was when trying to use GlovePIE to synch the Wiimote with laptop, since then I ditched that and use WDML miitransfer instead (as that's all I wanted it for), so now it stays on all the time. I don't understand why there should be any heat if it's only on standby. (Mine is a newer model and there is a little warmth - I expect the cat to curl up beside it during winter.).
Off topic - I noticed the other day that my Sky+ box turns itself to standby at night now, it's probably been doing that for ages but I just noticed as I forgot to switch it off a few evenings ago.
I don't understand why there should be any heat if it's only on standby.
It's because the Wii is periodically checking for data and updates. The network device and CPU, at least, will be used for this and so heat is generated. Additionally, the fans don't seem to kick in when the unit is on standby. So that's why there's a buildup of heat. Whether or not it's a potentially damaging buildup is another matter.
