I am just wondering what your views are on graphics generally; how important are they to you when playing a game? I know a lot of people claim that they would take gameplay over graphics but aside from retro games; how many of you can you honestly put this issue a side?
I guess the reason I am asking this is because of the very negative response that has been issued towards Force Unleashed Wii (not here; just on the net in general). Everyone seems to believe the game could have looked much better than it does. However with a studio like Lucas Arts I am not a sure they could have made it look much better (especially as its a ps2/wii title remember).
But ignoring the game specifics how bad do graphics have to be before they start to ruin the experience. Say Call of Duty 4 played exactly like it does but looked more like Doom 1 - Would it still be the hit that it is? Probably not because people like the visual flare it offers; and to be fair, how Call of Duty 4 presents itself actually does add to the intensity and fun of the experience (CoD4 happens to have very good gameplay as well of course).
Within this pondering do you prefer photo-realism or stylised/cell shaded? I for one prefer the look of Okami over Zelda TP... Hell I even think Zelda windwaker and phantom Hour Glass looks better than Zelda twilight princess as I prefer that somewhat cartoonish style.
Take Sue recently as well whom hosted a topic about Cruis'n - she said she was enjoying the game a lot and showed a screen shot and us lot instantly attacked how badly it looks; so for all those boasting that gameplay comes first; you obviously do deem visuals to hold some importance to your gaming experience. Where do you personally draw the hypothetical line?
Also Megaman 9 is going full out retro with its look. Now i like the old megaman games but I personally think it looks lazy; I would have preferred them to do something more in the style of the PSP megaman game.
Thoughts, suggestions and opinions - ready..... and go! ^.^

The Gameplay over Graphics ranters don't understand the situation. What they dislike, and I should hope all of us dislike, is how good gameplay is given less importance than graphics in a lot of games. But they confuse that with graphics = bad game. It doesn't, graphics add to a game, they don't make it the gameplay does that.
It also depends on what people mean when they say graphics.
The pro gameplay people tend to mean photo-realism and high-tech wizardry, but call them graphics. Graphics in my mind is the visual design of a game, and it doesn't have to be photo-realistic to be great.
To me, the odd bush that looks a bit pixilated doesn't matter. I'd be upset if the graphics were of the snes standard, but MKWii shows that even they look better spruced up on the wii! The gameplay, the flow of the game and the use of the controls is the most important
I'd say you have to have the gameplay first, but graphics are still pretty important. What I think is stupid is when a game's graphics are so poor compared to the modern day standard that it's clear the people who made it didn't put any effort in at all.
I'm quite impressed with games on my Gamecube, so the Wii looks completely fine to me. I also bought Paradroid for the VC which has about the most pared-down graphics you'd care to see...still fun!
They only become an issue for me if they interfere with gameplay, i.e. you cannot tell what the heck you're looking at, so in that regard modern != better because if you have flash graphics but cannot tell where you're supposed to go; what you're supposed to do/are able to do then they really don't matter, do they? Likewise if they look great but outstrip the hardware such that the game struggles to run properly, they're clearly a liability.
I have never really experienced the HD graphics of the other consoles, therefore the wii looks pretty good to me, being used to games with low quality graphics on my PC and PS2.
I personally still play classics like Myst on my PC, horrible graphics but the game is so fun it doesn't matter. I personally believe that graphics are a bonus, if the game play is excellent the good graphics should be a bonus. the ony time I think graphics can ruin a game is when they are obviously pixelated and could have been exponentially better for example on Guitar Hero III the crowd at each venue is all just copies of each other with extremely bad animation and textures, many times the crowd is 2d. this they could have improved, yet it doesn't wreck the game, it's just something I grimace at before the music starts

For me a perfect example of this was MOHH2 a game I looked forward to for months, looked OK in the trailer vids from the top sites but turned out to look no better than a PS2 game.

Agreed.
If a game flows nicely and is exciting then i'll enjoy it, i'm usually too immersed in the game to notice visuals a such
