Nintendos Q1 09 Results:DS, Wii Totally Cooling Off In Japan
Quote:
In 2006, the DS ruled Japan. (Heck, in 2007, too.) The hardware was hard to come by, and things got so back in 2006 that American DSes were re-imported into Japan to satisfy the demand. Things have tailed off considerably. According to Nintendo's Q1 FY3/09 statement, DS hardware sales dwindled, moving 580,000 units in Q1 this year. In last year's Q1, Nintendo moved a staggering 2 million plus DSes. Hardware isn't the only thing that suffered; DS software sales are down as well. Last year's Q1, 979,000 units of DS software were sold, compared to this part quarter's 493,000 units of DS software.
Same's true for the once red hot Wii console. In the previous year's Q1, Nintendo shifted 950,000 units. This past quarter, Nintendo sold 530,000 Wiis. Good news is that Wii software sales are up. Last year Q1, Nintendo moved 2.78 million units of Wii software. What about Q1 2009? A strong 3.9 million units. As the domestic business continues to diminish, Nintendo is clearly finding success with customers in North America and Europe. Japan, it seems, is on the decline.

That is correct...
April 07 - March 08 is a financial year...
So they may be calling this 09 financially; though usually announce 2007-2008 / 2008-2009 rather than just saying 2009 results...
a bit odd.

Nintendo's Q1 Results: $1 Billion Profit, Wii Hardware at 29.62 Million, DS Hardware at 77.54 Million
When Nintendo introduced the Nintendo DS and Wii to the world, many were skeptical whether or not Nintendo's new vision would work. Soon after the DS launched, all skeptics were silent and became believers. We then got introduced to Wii. Once again, people weren't sure whether or not this new controller concept would work properly and propel gaming into the next paradigm shift. Luckily for Nintendo investors, these ideas flourished and put tons of money into their pockets.
Nintendo has released their Quarter 1 results for 2008, and it's quite impressive. To say the Wii and DS print money for Nintendo is now an understatement.
April-June operating profit at Nintendo, creator of iconic game characters such as Mario and Zelda, rose to 119.19 billion yen ($1.10 billion) from 90.63 billion yen a year earlier. Since the November 2006 launches of the Wii and PS3, shares in Nintendo have more than doubled while Sony shares lost 12 percent. At $76 billion, Nintendo's market value is now twice as big as Sony's. -- Reuters
If those staggering numbers aren't impressive enough for you, then just wait until you see the hardware and software numbers from Nintendo. Earlier in the life of Wii, software may not have been moving in high-demand, but that isn't the story anymore. Wii hardware is selling just as fast as software is now. Nintendo revealed that Wii hardware is now nearing 30 million units worldwide.
In the console business, Wii hardware, which displayed increasing popularity in North America and Europe, sold a total of 5.17 million units worldwide (29.62 million units life-to-date), an increase of 1.74 million units from the same three-month period last year. Regarding Wii software, Mario Kart Wii has sold a total of 6.42 million units and Wii Fit has sold 3.42 million units worldwide. Thus, total sales of Wii software were 40.41 million units, an increase of 24.42 million units from the same quarter in 2007. -- Nintendo Quarter 1 Report
Sure, the Wii is moving mountains of hardware, but don't forget about the Nintendo DS. Despite having a slight slowdown in hardware sales, the DS is still packing the punch in terms of numbers. Worldwide sales of the Nintendo DS have reached well over 77 million.
Total sales of the Nintendo DS were 6.94 million units worldwide (77.54 million units life-to-date), a decrease of 0.04 million units from the same quarter last fiscal year. Total Nintendo DS software was 36.59 million units, an increase of 2.33 million units from the June quarter in 2007. -- Nintendo Quarter 1 Report
To the US (and the Japs) business wise we are in financial year 09 while in the UK we are in 08. Yup, very confusing indeed. Here were I work I have to do stuff on our UK system and also our US system, which have different current years. Not to mention US dates being all backwards!
As for the Wii, I guess hardware wise it's just moved into a new stage of it's product life cycle, just like all products do. Hardware sales are bound to go down at some stage, but as long as software sales remain strong I don't think there's anything to worry about.
