Not like this they're not. You want the difficulty level to be fairly linear....in which case, I'm happy sticking with 150cc (which is where I enjoy it most anyway). You
don't want it to be easy - medium - astronomically hard in one leap (something that RB A.I. introduces).
I'm quite happy with harder difficulties.....as long as they appear "fair"

Moving on to a related topic, I was thinking about the Mario Kart series in the light of this thread. For instance, what made it so good? Would the benefits translate over to the forthcoming Wii version?
Well, to answer that I compiled a short list of the bad bits from both the best of the series and the worst of the series (not including the already discussed snaking and sliding, rubber band A.I. and blue shells):
Mario Kart DS.
The best game has it's bad bits:
- ratings - if I work hard and get a gold medal in a 150cc star cup, I don't want to see that I only got a single star or an A. The whole point in beating a higher difficulty is the sense of accomplishment ("I've won - yaay") and that is all taken away when, despite the gold metal, you still only get a "letter".....its pointless. Furthermore, they appear to be random?? Sometimes I'm miles ahead on most races and only get a single*, others I only just win by the skin of my teeth and get 3*
. - items - again mentioned above, imo they have gotten too unbalanced and add too much luck to the game (plus if you're last you get the good ones but if you're first you get crap ones - NOT random like Wipeout).
.....to the worst of the series.
Mario Kart Double Dash
I'm sorry, but I'm frankly disgusted with this game. Why?.....in a word - control.
I borrowed this the other day and had a few evenings on it, and the steering is bloody disgraceful. Especially after playing MKDS. I would honestly say, it has probably the WORST steering of ANY driving game ever. Remember that PoS GTPro for the Wii?......this is worse. Remember a crap PS2 budget game called Penny Racers?......this is worse. You know those budget 99p games with white cases in carousels at the front of queues in grocery shops? The ones for PC's?......this is worse.
Let me explain:
You steer around a corner and about 1 second ahead is an obstacle.....
0 sec = Have come round the corner and spotted the object ahead.
0.2 sec = ?reaction time???, whatever it is , at this point you have the analogue stick fully to the Left.
0.4 sec = talk about sluggish, the kart has only started to point Left 0.2 sec later
0.6 sec = the kart has finally orientated itself to the left like you asked it to do over half a second ago!
0.8 sec = Now, even though you're finally pointing Left, the kart continues to drift in the same bloody direction (WTH? I'm
not pressing a shoulder button here!)
1.0 sec = The kart finally starts to shift it's tardy ar5e in the physical direction you asked it to 1 sec ago bef.......BAMMMMM......you hit the obstacle.
In the whole of the "non-manouevre" above, you actually haven't physically altered the trajectory of your kart very much from when you first exited the corner - A WHOLE SECOND LATER

.
On levels like 150cc, reaction times are important and this game simply has awful and sluggish reactions.....regardless of kart used or characters. It's simply unplayable and seriously is the WORST driving game I have EVER played. Shame on Nintendo for letting this be made imo.
Now I hope MK Wii has remedied the above "issues" in the same way that I hope it remedies Rubber Banding (although I don't think it will tbh)......but regardless of how it implements RB or A.I. or box items (etc), I've promised myself that if it even has
a hint of the steering control of MK DD, I'm trading mine in straight away --- online play or not.
