Default DS sales to the public reach 40million

Look closely at the image above.
Yes, your eyes do not deceive you.....DS sales have reached 40 million units sold to the general public as of the beginning of April .

Just goes to show that pure horsepower isn't enough in the gaming stakes.....you need innovative play as well

I for one, plan to use my DSlite for all the games I wouldn't normally get for the Wii.

For example, RPG's? --> I'll get the DS versions
Brain Training type games? --> I'll get the DS versions.
Old Arcade classics --> I think both VC and the DS can fulfill my needs here.

So when it come down to it, I'm not just playing the "same ol' same ol" but on a smaller screen....rather I'm playing different games for each.

If you look at it this way, it shows that the DS fills a slightly different niche to the Wii...

...and with dual DS/Wii hookups in future games, I'm hoping their complimentary natures can be a great asset to eachother

I am honestly supprised by that. What suprises me most is how badly the PSP is doing in relation to the DS, and how so many more have been sold than the consoles.

DS and Wii are both cheap, innovative and have games that work on their systems.

DS succeeds because it's a bloody handheld, Sony were idiots when they made the PSP too powerful, now they have a battery life as long as a snail on my grandmas patio, a control layout that doesn't work for certain genres and load times that replicate those found on console titles.

Whereas as DS is designed to play on the move, simple easy game catalogue for mobile gamers to get into, your into the action in seconds, when it's time to get off the bus... close the lid and don't worry because the battery life exceeds a day on that setting.

It's the perfect hand held and if only it stored music it would be just perfect...

I agree.

When you look back to previous generations of the handheld market one thing springs to mind - the longevity and durability of Nintendo in this field. Over the years different Gameboy incarnations have been involved with competition from, and I apologise for any glaring ommissions, the Game Gear, Lynx, Neo Geo +PSP, to name the major opponents for market share. Each time it has seen off it's competitor.

Why?

Not because of superior processing power, graphics or sound, and not always because of the range of software.

Ease of use and battery life. The two things that make a handheld great. Nintendo has focussed, as part of it's effort for each generation, on making the GB - DS as user friendly as possible.

I agree. I have a PSP, and hadn't touched it for AGES until last week, when i was at my grandparents. Then, at Pro Evo, the load times were unbareable. The battery life was poor. The system kept re-setting, and by god it annoyed me.

I may just buy a DS#

Out of interest, do you get those VIP star things in DS/GC?

YES! Gaffer having recently purchased one will be able to confirm / correct this but I'm pretty sure you get 500 vip stars

Can you still buy the regular DS, or does it have to be "Light"?

Not sure why you'd want the older one? The DSlite has a better backlit screen, is smaller, lighter, fits better together when closed and has, bizarrely, a larger stylus!

If you really want the original DS they are about £60 - £80 second hand.

Fair point.

I think that you would have a better overall experience with the Lite.

It is worth the extra money IMO.. .. .. ..
