Default Nintendo's relationship with Third party developers.

Ever since the Gamecube started seeing developers desert like rats from a sinking ship, the biggest concern on many peoples minds is whether the same could happen on the Wii.
Well could it?....

UbiSoft
  • UbiSoft recieved the first Alpha and Beta kits from nintendo. Even then, they had already started developing games on older Gamecube kits and used the new Wii kits to port across the controls. This was meant to give them a head start over the other publishers at developing games for the new Wii console. However, what has happened is that, without fail, all games developed so far by Ubisoft have been pretty lacklustre. It's at the point where I am starting to deliberately avoid games if I notice they're made by Ubisoft . However, this also means that Ubisoft have firmly stated their intentions to develop for the Wii. I would hope that as they put more time and effort into creating genuine Wii games (rather than ports from the 360), the games will get better and better.

Namco
  • Historically, they have already secured major franchises within Nintendo. One famous one is Donkey Kong. The subsequent Donkey Kong titles were also very popular amongst gamers.
  • Namco secures the StarFox license and develops StarFox Assualt, which goes on to ship in excess of a million copies.
  • Namco works with Nintendo to create a new arcade MarioKart (the first arcade game Nintendo had made in about a decade). The game also featured Pac-Man, probably the most famous and iconic video game character of all time.
This close co-operation bodes well for the future of Namco with Nintendo, as it was during the SNES era that Namco was tempted away from Nintendo to start developing for the TurboGrafx16 home console instead.
With this developing giant now firmly back into the Nintendo camp, the future looks VERY good for us Wii'ers (i'm patiently waiting for "Namco Arcade Classics" to arrive )

Capcom
  • Super Ghouls'n'Ghosts for the SNES....'nuff said
  • How could we forget one of the BEST games to come out on the Gamecube?...Resident Evil 4. The important thing to remember is that this wasn't just a great game...Capcom signed an exclusivity deal with Nintendo that brought a great franchise into Nintendo's camp (although the 'exclusivity' part has now expired). In fact, it was such a good game that they have now announced a specific Wii-only version.

Sega

Who'd have thought that these once bitterest of enemies would now be working together?
  • Initially, after the demise of the Dreamcast, Sega announced that it would concentrate on development only in the future (a tear-jerking moment for many of you I'm sure). As a result, F-Zero GX for the Gamecube was developed by in large, by Sega. This was an important license for them to obtain from Nintendo as it ensured the opportunity to develop new games for further consoles with Ninty.
  • Yet again, even more surprise. Nintendo have now granted a license to allow Sega to develop the first ever game with both Mario and Sonic starring. Who could've forseen this in the early 90's?
The new game will launch in anticipation of the next olympic games and is titled "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games"...to be released on both DS and Wii.

Konami
  • Yet another gaming giant supporting the Wii. Konami's biggest creation (almost their mascot) is Solid Snake. Previously only appearing on the PS2 (now cross platform), Konami has given permission to allow him to appear in the upcoming Super Smash Bros Brawl game for the Wii. This indicates the willingness of both gaming concerns to work together.
  • Rumours abound that the next Silent Hill game will appear on the Wii as well. As the majority of these games take place in dark, damp corridors/rooms with little light and an intentional graininess to add a claustrophobic feel to proceedings, it will not be a game that necessarily requires HD support, and is therefore more likely to be Wii-bound as well.
  • Konami is due to make an exclusive Dance Dance Revolution title for the Wii entitled Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party.
  • Konami is responsible for the excellent Elebits/Eledees game for the Wii...proving that they are happy to spend time and effort making games that have innovative use of the Wiimote rather than just port tired old Xbox games across to the Wii (Ubisoft take note ).

Square-Enix
  • One of the best selling franchises of all time in Japan (and a biggie worldwide too) is coming to the DS. Yes folks, Final Fantasy...a series once known for it's PS2 exclusivity...is about to land on the DS in the form of Revenant Wings. We already have FFIII, and this shows just how commited Square Enix is to Nintendo platforms.
  • There is also rumour of a Final Fantasy game appearing on the Wii.
  • Square-Enix establishes a studio devoted entirely to producing Nintendo games. "The Game Designers Studio" was set up with the help of Nintendo.
  • The flip side of this coin is that Nintendo has not been averse to giving Square Enix use of it's own internal studios.....namely, Genious Sonority being used to help Square-Enix bring Dragon Quest (yet another major franchise) to the Wii.

Independants
Last but not least, we have the many many 3rd party independant developers that are currently interested in the Wii:
  • n-Space is a development company that created the fantastic Gamecube game Geist.
There is always room for a sequel on the Wii.
  • Kuju Entertainment has the Advance Wars license which they have used to create Battalion Wars. This is a franchise that Nintendo publishes...it's so succesful that a sequel for the Wii is due.
  • Retro Studios is developing the hotly anticipated Metroid Prime 3 corruption for the Wii:

By all accounts, the playable demos so far indicate that this will be a BIG success on the Wii console.
  • Monolith Soft comes under the Nintendo umbrella to bring us Disaster Day Of Crisis:
  • Both Pipeworks Software and Santa Cruz Games team up to bring us Godzilla unleashed, due out probably around Xmas '07 on both the Wii and the DS:

Well I could go on and on. It seems that the developers aren't merely developing for the Wii, they're positively flocking to the console in droves. For every shortsighted developer that decides to only work on the 360 or PS3, there are many more who can't wait to get their hands on Wii devkits it seems.
Up to this point, there have already been a few very dissapointing titles appearing (Rampage anyone ) as well as excellent ones (Zelda/Heatseeker). However, as Wii devkits get utilised more and more (and the Gamecube devkits are thrown away ), we'll hopefully see bigger and better games making it to this most innovative of consoles....

The future looks bright.....the future looks Ninty

Another great Blog - keep up the good work.

Not much too add really, except with regards to Ubisoft, hopefully they'll they'll get things right. After all they did make some of the best games of the last gen. (Prince of Persia, and Beyond Good And Evil to name a couple)

Oh, and Square are definetly working on a follow up to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on the Wii.

Thank you

Oh, I forgot to add:

Ignition....busy getting Mercury Meltdown Revolution ready for a launch any day now (I hope).

This is yet another franchise that's jumped ship....I'm sure that more will follow as developing for the Wii is both:
a) easy as the code is not too dissimilar to the Gamecube code
b) entertaining as software companies try to "out do" each other in trying to create new ways of using the Wiimote and Nunchuck system.

Final Fantasy = I was looking for a game to introduce me to RPG (not having played very much of this genre), and I'm hoping this will be it

This isn't the big picture by any means, just a list of publishers and what their doing on the Wii.

Nintendo's relationship is hazy to bad.

When Nintendo had the influence it used to treat developers like ****e. Now thing's have improved a fair bit but that doesn't mean treating 3rd parties bad has done them any good. Square Enix ran away for Sony just to escape Nintendo's claws. The fact it's coming back is proof of a change in attitude with Nintendo.

Nintendo didn't give 3rd party developers the capabilities to make games for the Wii until a few months before release, they gave them GC's with motion sensoring to play with. Hense Nintendo are to blame for all the titles that just don't look as good as Zelda.

Nintendo also told 3rd parties to sod off when it came to online play till they were ready... ... .... ... and made some limitations on such things as using Mii's in their games (not available for implementation till TBC 2007, with exception from Mysims)

But then again Nintendo is being really nice to 3rd parties. Historically fans bought Nintendo consoles for games by Nintendo themselves and not for EA sports games ectra... by only having one major release (Zelda) at launch and keeping Mario/Metriod/Smash in TBC 2007 limbo (I bet you one is in 200 Nintendo has us buying games we normally wouldn't have considered and putting up with half arsed games like MOH V and Sonic.

As for Ubisoft, everything they put onto the 360 last year was gold, weird how they rush Nintendo's stuff.

Glad you agree

As Nintendo becomes "nicer" to 3rd parties, and starts to work more closely with them, we'll end up getting more and better games for the Wii....hence the gist of the post.

Re:Ubisoft...Well i'm hoping it's not just a case of Ubisoft thinking "let's put rushed ports on the Wii, at least we're making profit on them...then use this money to further develop our 360 and PS3 games".

Not quite, but almost, using the Wii as a "cash cow" to finance the other games for other platforms (far out I know, but just crossed my mind)

if they would just spend a little more time developing their games they'd sell a whole lot more but as it stands most 3rd party games risk becoming swamped by the bigger AAA titles that nintendo will be releasing. capcom have definately got the right idea working on 2nd party projects and is the company i have the most respect for after playing resi 4. what i don't want is subquality ps2 refits with gimicky controls like tony hawks and medal of honour. there is still a lot of unexplored territory on the wii, come on companies, it costs a fraction of the price of a ps3 game to produce a wii title, put more effort in.

Default 3rd Party Titles part 2.

EDIT: rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd tack this onto the existing one

As a follow on from my previous entry regarding 3rd party titles, I thought I'd follow it up a little.

In short, the story so far is as follows:
  • Sony, M$ and most developers pooh-pooh ninty's new "Revolution" console and decide to go all out supporting either 360 or PS3.
  • 360 appears...so far so good. PS3 gets ridiculous delays and pi55es off most of Euroland in the process, and additionally ends up being monster hard to code for.
  • Revolution appears (now called Wii of course) and decides to show everyone how it SHOULD be done. Poorer graphics, but gameplay and FUN factor leagues ahead of the competition.
  • Goes on to sell out everywhere......even now. Demand is unprecendented.
  • Aforementioned developers along withn rivals M$ and Sony are quite literally caught with their pants down ----- "Oh Noes.....who'd've known this'd happen?" they quietly opine to one another (Sony has even gone so far as to attempt to copy Ninty with their half-arsed 6axis controller).
  • Importantly, all these developers who previously ignored the potential, have suddenly woken up and are now spending MORE time developing for the Wii than for ANY other console (360 included).

Now it takes about 1-2 years to create a game. Games on the Wii are far far far cheaper and easier to code than either Xbox or PS3 (ave spend to develop a big budget Wii vs. PS3 game = 4mill vs. 30mill ). Not only that, but with it's runaway success so far, developers have realised that they made a mistake opting to ignore it.
Of course, Ubisoft is the exception, being the only notable 3rd party to REALLY go the whole hog with dev support for Wii early on.

Now look at the above statistic. 1-2 years.
Hmmmmmmmmm....interesting Mr Bond . This means that the 3rd party games that developers quickly stuck their A-teams on, will only really start hitting us around Xmas '07 time.

Another interesting fact; number of games currently in development for each platform (excluding already released and not for release in EU):
PS3 - 166
360 - 224
Wii - 208

Also numbers of exclusives currently in development for the consoles:
Wii = 69
PS3 = 40
360 = 39

Remember, I'm just giving "currently in dev" figures here......for instance, the 360 has 31 already released exclusives meaning that it's total is a whopping 70. Wii and PS3 released much later...but the gist is the same.

On top of this, Nintendo has a few more tricks up it's sleeve.....for instance, the pending release of a Games Channel that allows you to download new games (rather than classics a la VC) similar to XBL and Sony's online service.

They're also starting their online service (Mario Strikers Charged) and it looks like they may at least hold their own against the competition even if they don't scale the heights of XBL.

So in short, yes, it's not shocking that most of the 3rd party efforts to date, have been very shoddy - but that's because the devs realized they were about to miss the boat and they'd better get SOMETHING out there and get it out there FAST. Hence the slew of utter crapware foisted on us by Ubisoft early on. However, as the userbase of the Wii continues to expand (eventually surpassing that of the 360), 3rd parties will have no choice but to support the Wii and cash in (which I believe they've started to do already).
The misconception is that they don't want to take on Nintendo's own hard hitters such as Mario Kart/Galaxy/Strikers/Papery Thingy etc etc...but this is a silly argument imo as then why would these SAME developers "take on" the likes of Halo or Gran Turismo?
If they were all as cowardly as that, we wouldn't see ANY 3rd party efforts on any console.
No. I believe a 3rd party developer just wants to make money. They don't particularly care if the console maker themselves makes good games, that won't stop them competing....they still want to make money themselves (regardless of wether it's Ninty/Sony/M$ they're "competing" against).
I personally couldn't give a 5h** WHO made the game I buy....it just needs to be GREAT. This is why I bought Heatseeker. The idea that the majority of Wii owners care more about Nintendo games is utter rubbish imho.....ESPECIALLY since I have a sneaky feeling that MORE Wii owners are new gamers than the specific "Ninty-loving" minority.

The proof of the pudding is that the Ninty-loving minority had gamecubes...but the Wii has surpassed the sales rates of Gamecubes so far.
Where have the extra people come from? Yes, that's right, they're not people specifically looking to play in-house Ninty games (nintendo-loyalists), they're the otherwise normal non-gamers mixed with previous non-ninty gamers who simply want a fun title.
So the idea that it will only be Nintendo titles that sell on the Wii I believe to be a false prediction this time round.
Yes, Ninty titles will sell.....but won't necessarily automatically be the only ones that will (i.e., unlike in previous generations, this time round I don't believe that people are buying the Wii to just play their favourite Nintendo games).

Incentives to develop for the Wii (apart from the biggest one of FAT PROFITS ) include Nintendo already releasing the capability for third parties to go online gaming as well as for them to include Mii's in their games (Sega's currently making one for instance).

So hold on to your seatbelts folks. Like any console, the first year is the poorest. It's Xmas '07 when we'll really start to see the 3rd party onslaught.
