Default Reputation FAQ

As you may well know, there have been a lot of questions asked about the rep system on this forum, and people are never quite sure of the answer. Therefore I have decided to create a FAQ to (hopefully) answer everyone's questions about the system.

What is the rep system for?
It is a way to reward members who have been helpful, or have contributed to the forum is a positive way. However, it can also be used to punish people who have caused trouble on the forum or have offended you in some way.

How do I give rep?
Simply find the post you want to reward (or punish) and click the scales to the bottom left of the post. Then select either Approve or Disapprove, giving a reason for why you are leaving the rep. If you feel the need, sign the rep with your username, as the person will not be able to see who left the rep otherwise. However, admins can see who left them rep.

How do I view what rep I have received?
You can view the last 5 rep comments in your UserCP. Simply click WiiUserCP in the top blue banner.

What do the coloured dots next to the comments in my UserCP mean?
Green means the person has approved of your post, and they have made your rep count increase.
Grey means the person has not got any rep giving power, and has not altered your rep count.
Red means they have disapproved, and have taken points away from your rep count.

Why do people have more and differently coloured squares under their username?
These show how many or how little rep points someone has. The more green-y squares the person has, the more they have contributed and been helpful on the forum. The more red squares they have, the greater they have upset people.

What determines how many rep points I give or take?
Admin's give out 10 points, regardless of how much rep, or how many posts they have.
Every year that you are a member you gain 1 'rep-altering power'.
Every 100 posts you get means you get 1 'rep-altering power'.
Every 50 rep points gives you 1 'rep altering power'.

So a member of 5 years, with 300 posts and 100 rep points will give or take 11 points (everyone has 1 rep altering power to begin with)

Why has someones rep not counted towards my rep count?
For rep to count, the person who left it must have at least 50 posts and at least 10 rep points. So new members and people with a negative rep count will not have any rep giving power.

When I leave rep, I get the message 'Spread your rep around". What does this mean?
It means that you have already repped this person recently, and you will have to rep 5 other people before being able to rep the same person again.

What other reason is there that I can't give rep?
You are limited to giving out 10 lots of rep a day.

I hope this has explained a few things, and if you think something else should be added, send me a PM. I will lock this as there is already another thread discussing rep.

Just an update to these FAQs, here is a list of all of the comments you can have when you hover over your reputation dots at certain reputation values:

As mentioned in the disabling rep thread, the above info is going to change.

What is to change?

Before:
Admin's give out 10 points, regardless of how much rep, or how many posts they have.
Every year that you are a member you gain 1 'rep-altering power'.
Every 100 posts you get means you get 1 'rep-altering power'.
Every 50 rep points gives you 1 'rep altering power'.

How many reputation clicks can a user give over each 24 hour period?: 10
How many different users must you give reputation to before you can hit the same person again?: 5
Minimum post count before you can give out rep: 50

After:
Admin's give out 50 points, regardless of how much rep, or how many posts they have.
Every year that you are a member you gain 1 'rep-altering power'.
Every 1000 posts you get means you get 1 'rep-altering power'.
Every 500 rep points gives you 1 'rep altering power'.

How many reputation clicks can a user give over each 24 hour period?: 5
How many different users must you give reputation to before you can hit the same person again?: 10
Minimum post count before you can give out rep: 25
