I assume you're talking about Tennis? Well I found that swinging the 'racket' slowly and horizontally (will some upwards motion) keeps the ball moving slower because it will go upwards and spend more time in the air, if you slice downwards the ball will go more horizontally and therefore a lot faster.
Have a go with that in mind and see if it helps.
