yep, I loved the FF7 ending because it had closure, but also left enough open to keep you wondering. Those are the best endings, you don't want everything answered for. With stuff left open, it leaves you to fill in the gaps, and that helps you relate to and feel closer to the story.
I mean, that's why the silent hill games are (were?) so good. And why Donnie darko, once & the blair witch project were so good. There are plenty of examples.
