Try using everything that comes with your mac! There's plenty todo without any extra programs! Garage band is a good laugh...erm and if you whack a few photos in iphoto have a fiddle around with the photo settings and you can get some cool things goin on!

As for other random free programs... Quicksilver is a must, Adium X is good, MPEG streamclip is handy for any video that quicktime wont play...though you should probably download VLC aswel.
