I turned mine off months ago because it was constantly popping up and sending me email notifications (hey, I was popular once!
)
These days, I just keep a watchful eye on my private messages at the top of the screen, an always go straight there if a new one appears (in bold)
Have your settings been changed somehow? (glitch, maybe?)
